Beef ban: Why BJP's on losing side?
10/6/2015 12:09:43 AM

ET Report
jammu, Oct 5: The BJP is again on the back foot after Supreme Court of India has suspended order of the J&K High Court (Jammu bench) which had sought strict implementation of the ban on sale of beef in the state.
The apex court's order is a sort of victory for the opponents of the beef ban in Jammu and Kashmir who will now be emboldened to get the section 298-A and 298-B fully revoked.
Already National Conference (NC), Congress and some small parties in the Kashmir valley are in a process of forcing Government to revoke the ban on slaughtering of bovine animals and sale of beef in the state.
In this regard, the Legislative Assembly is already in possession of bills submitted by NC, CPI (M) and MLA Langate, Engineer Abdul Rashid, and Speaker Kavinder Gupta had announced that he would decide on these bills after Supreme Court's decision on the HC order.
Now, when SC has suspended the HC decision, BJP must be worried as forces against beef ban are getting stronger by the day. Though the SC has asked the HC to constitute a three-judge bench to decide on the matter, it is not a good sign for BJP and other Jammu-based parties whose vote bank depends on Hindu majority areas of the state.
BJP's constituency is Jammu plains where most of the Hindus are living and who have given a decisive mandate to the saffron party in last year's Assembly election.
It was due to this mandate that BJP was able to form Government in the state in coalition with Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
But now when Hindus want complete ban on slaughtering of bovine animals and Muslims don't want any interference in their religious matter, the BJP is obviously a party on the losing side.
