Jammu, Jan 22 : National Conference faces stiff resistance from within over proposed alliance with the BJP. It has been reliably learnt that half-a-dozen MLAs of the party had told the party president that they will walk away if the party is thinking of an alliance with the BJP. According to the sources, the NC has started giving feelers to the BJP that it's ready for an alliance with it. The BJP had though not responded but the party MLAs had strongly opposed it on getting this news. "We have been given the mandate to sit in the opposition and if we align with the BJP midway it will be death knell for us in the next elections as we will be branded as 'opportunistic' and PDP the 'saviour' of the Kashmir and this we can't allow," said a NC MLA, wishing not to be named. According to the sources, a Jammu based MLA of the party, who has direct access to the senior leader of the BJP, has been running back and forth to stitch this alliance. It's because of this reason, he had advised Dr Farooq Abdullah, to make regular tour of the Jammu to establish himself as once more who is 'sensitive' to the Jammu aspiration. "It was on the advice and insistence of this NC MLA that Dr Farooq Abdullah gave the statement that he is ready for an alliance with the BJP. But, after getting strong reaction from the party, he latter back tracked. Dr Farooq may be having a dream of being CM once more and the NC leader from Jammu may have some more interests but will prove fatal for us and we will not accept it," said the sources. The BJP has though not responded to overtures of the NC. |
