'India won't accept Rahul at the helm'
2/1/2016 11:15:13 PM
Does Rahul Gandhi need more exposure and grinding to become ripe for giving direction to his party and the country, especially when there is no one in Congress to tutor or mentor him? He is often accused by the party elders of stubbornness and lack of motivation to become a leader. Of course, he has Sonia Gandhi behind him but she can't be Indira Gandhi as she herself is said to be dependent on a 'select' group of party leaders who guide her on various issues facing the country. Rahul, with all the party backing, may be trying to establish himself as a leader of masses and to make himself acceptable to the party veterans, but there are many in the Congress who doubt his leadership qualities. Indira Gandhi loyalist M L Fotedar is among his critics. He was quoted by a news agency as saying that "a time will soon come when questions will be raised from within the Congress ranks on the leadership qualities of Rahul. The Congress veteran is said to have also discussed this and other issues in his yet-to-be-released book - The Chinar Leaves. Majority Congressmen feel that he is not the stuff to be projected as the party's prime ministerial candidate in the next General Elections in the country. Though Fotedar would by all means like to see Congress growing from strength to strength, he went to the extent of saying that Rahul's leadership was not acceptable to the country and there was none to provide direction to the party. Even some AICC leaders privately confess that certain people around Sonia never wish Rahul to succeed because they know if he establishes himself as a leader and if his accessibility increases among the masses, they would themselves become irrelevant. These leaders are alleged to be working overtime to derail him, instead of guiding him on the right path. Surrounded by them, Sonia is virtually in a dilemma. She has an overriding desire to see her son succeed in politics, but she also doesn't want to do things without her 'yes-men' in the party, who actually don't want to see Rahul as their leader. The rivals of Rahul and his Congress party have often accused him of being 'confused from head to toe', saying: "How can you expect vision from a man who is confusion personified? Congress has never come forward strongly with answers to these accusations. Rather the party 'think-tanks' never bothered to counter such allegations against their leader and project him as a man of vision and wisdom. Instead the party was fulsome in its praise for him. This party strategy neither helped Rahul nor Congress and ultimately led to the party's debacle in the last Lok Sabha polls. The party needs someone of the stature of Narendra Modi to take on its political rivals and not Rahul, who according to the party insiders, is still not ripe for the top job. Let him first gain political maturity while working under the party elders and then lead the party from the front. Though success in politics is broadly the result of team work, the leader has to be a visionary and acceptable to the masses. But Rahul has still a long distance to cover to first become acceptable to the party. Let him utilise all his vision to convert all his criticism into appreciation for him. Let him identify the real issuing facing the nation and then take on the BJP. If he continues to criticise his rivals for the sake of criticism only, he may still take a long time to carve out some space for him in the hearts of the countrymen. There are already certain lacunae at the heart of Congress. Rahul's critics within Congress have a piece of advice for him: Be part of the efforts, as and when these are taken, to set the things right instead of further confusing the matters.
