Early Times Report

Srinagar, Feb1: Three people attempted self immolation as a dozen suffered injuries in police action on Monday after demolition squad of Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA) bulldozed residential structures in Saidakadal and Ashia Bagh areas in old city.
Witnesses said three people attempted self immolation by sprinkling kerosene oil on their bodies who were later hospitalized in critical condition. They said dozens others suffered injuries after police charged batons to quell their protest.
As soon as the demolition squad entered into the area people in large numbers including men women and children took to the roads and staged massive demonstrations against the drive.
Traffic movement on busy Saidakadal road also came to grinding halt after the residents staged sit-in protest against what they termed LAWDA's 'autocratic' policy.
Witnesses said that police swung into action and baton charged the protesters which resulted into the injuries to around dozen people including some females.
People who attempted self immolation have been identified as Manzoor Ahmad Darzi, Imtiyaz Ahmad and Ali Mohammad Akhoon.
All of them have been shifted to hospital for specialized treatment.
The agitated inhabitants alleged that the LAWDA authorities without any notice entered into the area and started bulldozing the reconstructed flood hit structures for which government under its rehabilitation policy had already issued cheques.
They said that no further construction has taken place in the area after 2104 as the people are yet to overcome the losses after devastating floods.
"No doubt we are living in notified area but the way authorities bulldozed our houses is inhuman and undemocratic. We are living under makeshift tents along with our families ever since the floods washed away our dwellings," Manzoor Ahmad a protester told 'Early Times'.
He said that the government had already issued cheques to the residents living in the area to reconstruct their flood affected houses, "If these are illegal structures then why the government issued cheques for their renovation,"
"On one hand government is making loud slogans about the rehabilitation of flood affected population of Kashmir while on the other poor people are forced to live under open sky, where shall we go, what is our fault we want answer," Rahti an elderly women yelled.
She said government should come clear as to whether they want us to live or they should commit suicide along with their families.
