Early Times Report

Srinagar, Feb 1: Estates department has allegedly provided accommodation to influential people on the basis of 'fake representation.'
Documents accessed by Early Times reveal that influential people working as need base employees in Doordarshan Kendra (DDK) Srinagar have submitted documents along with "fake representation" to the Estates department and are enjoying free of cost accommodation.
Documents also reveal that despite complaints influential people continue to enjoy government accommodation since 2002 with impunity.
A departmental letter vide 70-DE of 2002, dated 05/02/2002 mentions details about one decision of the Department to provide Housing to one person actually working as need base employee in DDK but due to lawlessness, the same person has been shown as "News Monitor" in documents submitted to Estates Department, a post which does not exist in DDK.
The decision to provide accommodation to this influential person is also supported by a reference letter of then Deputy Director Estates vide number 3-E (1/2) NP/1913/ estdt of 24-09-2001.
People working at DDK told Early Times that there is no such post of "News Monitor" in DDK Srinagar and neither the person provided accommodation by Estates Department is a permanent employee there.
A written complaint was filed in this regard in 2012 but the department is yet to probe the matter. "No step has been taken to identify and punish the officials misusing their official position," sources said.
To evade Public criticism in the said case of wrong doing, Department in 2012 vide order number GAD(ADM)288/2007-1 dated 26/12/2012 ordered a probe to ascertain the facts.
However, according to sources, probe was a mere eyewash aimed at silencing the critics.
Sources said that this is not only case of its kind as in Natipora-Chanapora, Rajbagh, Dalgate and Jawahar Nagar areas blue eyed people mostly close associates have also occupied similar government accommodations.
Sources said that there is no check and balance on payment of electricity bills, water bills and neither has any directions been issued for usage of electricity and water for people living in such luxurious accommodations.
Meanwhile despite repeated attempts Director Estates couldn't be contacted.
