| Dog menace continues to irk attendants and visitors at GMCH | | | Nitesh Sangral

Jammu, Feb 1 : Dog menace is on the rise not only in the winter capital of state but in Government hospitals including Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Jammu and its other associated hospitals.
On any given day a group of dogs can be seen moving in and around the emergency block, recovery ward and passage leading to the ultrasound clinic in the GMCH Jammu. If recalled GMCH Jammu also hit media limelight in 2012 when monkey were found sleeping on the beds of emergency ward and a media person also had uploaded a video on Youtube on July 19, 2012 showing monkey freely roaming in the emergency wing of the Govt Medical College and Hospital in Jammu
The incident pained the then Chief Minister who tweeted: "I am shocked by the images of the monkey in a Jammu hospital. "Before I say anything I owe it to my Minister to first ask him to explain," he tweeted. The hospital authorities who had failed to regulate movement of visitors in the hospital premises despite various steps including entry slips yet seem to have taken lenient view of the presence of large number of dogs and monkeys as well. The dogs not only roam around throughout the day but also spread litter and secrete in and around the recovery ward. Regular visitors to the GMC&H Jammu premises complain that on number of occasions the message has been conveyed to the hospital authorities to take care of the dog menace and find a permanent solution to the problem but till date no sincere effort has been made by the hospital authorities to address the issue.
The situation is grim during evenings and it becomes difficult for the patients’ attendants to shoo away the dogs.
A guard manning the gates outside the main emergency block on anonymity said they usually keep an eye on the movement of visitors to the hospital premises but if a stray dog manages to gain access inside the premises it is very difficult to scare it as it will create chaos within the hospital.
The sweepers working in the hospital also claimed that they used to scare away the dogs but these turn to hospital for the want of leftover food thrown by the visitors. "We time and again appeal to vsitors not to litter the leftover food but all in vain many visitors even throw their left over eatables from the fourth and fifth floor of hospital to the ground. A sweeper briefly said people used to target the lower rung and complain to authorities about sweepers not doing their jobs but many a time educated lot are also seen throwing waste eatables and leaving empty plates and cups on the tables in 'Nescafe canteen' which offers only self service and never bother to put the empty plates in the nearby dustbins. A medico also humming similar tunes said that lack of 'civic sense' among the visitors be it educated or the illiterate is root cause of the unhygienic surroundings in the Hospitals be it jammu city or elsewhere in state. "Who cares? approach needs to be seized among all of us, he said adding," I personally believe only this will be the threshold (gateway) to Swachh Bharat Campaign. |
