Early Times Report

Jammu, Feb 1: Even as government of India is pumping crores of rupees into Jammu and Kashmir for maintenance of state roads under various schemes, owing to callous attitude and inefficiency of state officials, the dilapidated condition of several roads of winter capital is causing immense hardship to the commuters as the Government has virtually not undertaken repair work on these roads for two years. Jaspreet Kour, a local of Miran Sahib told Early Times that around 10 km long stretches of road between Rani Bagh to RS Pura is in very bad condition and is dotted with potholes and bumps due to which the commuters are facing tremendous inconvenience every day. "The passenger vehicles have to move at snail's pace in order to avoid the potholes and bumps increasing the travel time for commuters who have to reach offices, schools and colleges", he said.
The residents of these areas also complained that several people including children have developed respiratory disorders due to inhaling of dust emanating from the road. Huge columns of dust rise due to the continuous vehicular movement on the road, which is responsible for respiratory diseases in the area.
They further said that during rains, these potholes get filled with water making the pedestrian movement very difficult. Private Vehicle owners also complain of frequent breakdown of their vehicles. "We do not want to ply on this road because the maintenance cost of our vehicles has gone very high. Many times we approached concerned Member of Legislative assembly and higher authorities of PWD, R&B but they gave verbal assurance to fill the potholes within days but onground nothing has been done", another resident of Indra Nagar said.
They appealed Governor NN Vohra and District Development Commissioner to intervene and get the repair work on this crucial road started immediately.
