State BJP 'endorses' Mehbooba's conditions for Govt formation
2/2/2016 12:08:08 AM
Early Times Report

JAMMU, Feb 1: The hardball that PDP president Mehbooba Mufti played in the Sunday meeting of the party at Srinagar has, it appears, won the game. Addressing the meeting, she said that she wanted an assurance from the BJP that the agenda of alliance will be implemented in a definite timeframe and that she would not work with the BJP until and unless the BJP gave that assurance. She said many other things but the bottom line was the same.
Her line clicked the same day, as the BJP took no time to endorse her line and reassure her that the BJP will give her unstinted support so that she could fulfill all the dreams of late Mufti Sayeed. The statement of endorsement was issued in the evening by the party's spokesperson Sunil Sethi. Since the statement was issued by the party chief spokesperson, it could be construed as the party's official statement.
In his written statement, Sethi, like the PDP spokesperson Naeem Akhtar, described the "Agenda of Alliance reached between PDP and BJP leadership during detailed deliberations spread over two months as a 'sacred' document for carrying forward the coalition". "The government of alliance was formed of two parties who have little ideological similarities but decided to come together for the larger benefit of general public to provide good governance," he said to reassure the PDP leadership, which had made it loud and clear that for the party Agenda of Alliance was more sacred than the office of the Chief Minister.
So much so, the BJP spokesperson said that "the Agenda of Alliance is not negotiable for government dispensation of the alliance partners" and that "the vision of late Mufti Sahib can be carried forward by working on Agenda of Alliance". "The people have great hopes from political parties (PDP and BJP) to take call on Government Formation as Governor's dispensation is no substitute for politically elected government…The agenda was for a period of six years and its terms can't be bound in time frame. The whole Agenda of Alliance has to be completed within the full term of government".
Not only Sunil Sethi, State BJP president Sat Sharma today told to a news channel that the "BJP is prepared to do more than what the Agenda of Alliance says" and even contradicted MLC Ramesh Arora's Statement that "if the lady sets new conditions, then the BJP will have to think if the lady could be given three years or full term and that the BJP will insist on rotational Chief Minister".
Now that the State BJP has endorsed the stand of Mehbooba Mufti, it can be said that the PDP and the BJP have surmounted the last hitch. In other words, the PDP and the BJP have resolved their differences. There could be the PDP-BJP coalition government in place anytime from now. It is a different story that the people of Jammu and Ladakh will not appreciate the BJP's decision to dump Shyama Prasad Mookerjee for the sake of power.
