Jamaat under scanner for fomenting trouble near encounter sites
4/22/2016 12:09:05 AM
ET Report
Jammu, Apr 21: Jamaat-i-Islami (JI), a pro-Pakistan separatist organization, which claims to have its cadres spread across Kashmir has come under the scanner of the security agencies for fomenting trouble at encounter sites and instigating people to indulge in stone pelting to disrupt the gunfights, sources told Early Times.
They said, the trend to disrupt encounters is common in south Kashmir where the presence and influence of Jamaat-i-Islami is more. "Present militancy in Kashmir is all about radicalization. Youth have been influenced and radicalized by the extremist elements. It's a cause of concern and strategies are being devised to counter the propaganda of the separatist elements," the source added.
He said, "Police and other agencies have almost finalized the list of such people who are believed to be masterminds behind instigating the youth and brainwashing them."
Sources said, "People sitting in Pakistan have realized that separatists have outlived their utility and they have roped in new recruits under the garb of religion."
They said, "This is a disturbing trend as the people who are involved in radicalization of youth are doing their job silently and are posing as saints, who are out to preach religion."
A police officer while talking to Early Times said, "The Hurriyat Conference led by the Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Jamaat-i-Islami are the two faces of the same coin. Both the organizations want to keep the pot boiling. The only difference is that their handlers sitting across the Line of Control have changed their strategy and they are handling Jamaat and Geelani separately. The militant outfit Hizbul-Mujahideen is the armed wing of both these parties."
The Police officer said, "Security forces have broken the back of militancy in the state due to the strong intelligence grid which has been established during all these years. Militants are on the run as they have no weapons and money. To overcome the dying militancy Jamaat and Hurriyat are trying to build the new army of stone pelters which can be used to vitiate peace."
"These stone pelters instigate people to march towards the encounter sites to disrupt gunfights and provoke the forces so that civilian casualties take place and situation takes an ugly turn. Police and Army have issued advisories asking common people to stay away from encounter sites and beware of the miscreants who are paid from Rs 500/ to Rs 1000/ to foment trouble," the source added.
A police official while referring to the recent shutdown calls given by the separatists in Srinagar said, "Separatists forced the people to sit at homes last week and they were waiting for a killing to take place in Srinagar city, but the city remained calm and no untoward incident happened."
He said, "The only concern for the security agencies is south Kashmir as the Jamaat has very little influence ion north and central Kashmir."
