Early Times Report

Kishtwar, Sept 18: A close look on the striker calendar issued by the Joint Hurriyat Conferences from 8th September to 16th September-2016, reveals that traders especially shopkeepers in Kashmir were asked to open their shops after 6 pm each day and people were also asked to shop during this time to extend maximum benefit to the businessmen closely associated with separatist leaders.
Common traders and businessmen were robbed of the benefits they look forward to during the peak shopping season ahead of Eid festival, which was marred by the protest calendars.
Bilal Ahmad, a driver by profession alleged that "Joint Resistance" of Huriyat Conference is only a ploy to extend benefits to their own businessmen members in a planned manner by announcing relaxations in strikes from 6pm onwards. The active members of Huriyat conference especially office bearers of 'Awami Action Committee' and 'Jamaat-i-Islami' are mostly businessmen and are running their shops in the Srinagar city and in other towns of Kashmir. Separatist leader Mirwaiz Umer Farooq's own organization 'Awami Action Committee' has its active members' base working as shop-keepers in downtown and Lal - Chowk area of Srinagar city while Syed Ali Geelani's organization 'Jaamat-i-islami & Tehreek-i-Huriyat' has its member's base working as shopkeepers spreading in various towns of Kashmir. Similarly Yasin Malik's JKLF has its base at Maisuma and its adjacent area in Srinagar city.
"It seems that Joint Huriyat Conference issued such a protest calendar intentionally in which their own active members get maximum benefits during the strikes" said the angry driver.
He further said that during the normal days in Kashmir shopping is usually done in the late hours and in a planed manner shopkeepers were asked to open their shops in the prime-time after 6pm during Eid days to ensure greater benefits for the active members of both the factions of Huriyat conference and JKLF.
"In every protest calendar which had been issued so far has some relief for the shopkeepers whereas transporters were pushed to the walls" rued the driver.
Bilal Ahmad further said "Transporters are the mostly affected by the continuous strikes from last over 70 days and it is impossible for transporters to carry out their activities after 6pm. All the commercial vehicles are parked idle since last over 70 days " he maintained.
Ali Mohammad, another driver said "We have spend all our savings on basic needs during the continuous strikes in last over 70 days and some of the drivers/transporters have sold their belongings to meet their daily minimal needs. If the Strikes will not end soon in near future, there remains no option for transporters other than to beg." "Large number of commercial vehicles were damaged by the paid stone-pelters during the strikes when they tried to move out on roads to earn their livelihood. In one of the statement, separatist leaders warned us to remain away from the roads. This is injustice towards us" he added.
People have expressed dismay how administration permits shopkeepers to open their shops after 6pm to follow protest calendar and allow parallel government of Joint Huriyat conference to work in Kashmir.
