Locals express concern over dry spell, forest fires

Banihal, Oct 18: The people in upper reaches of Banihal are worried due to ongoing 'dry spell' which they reason as the root cause of increasing fire incidents in the forest areas of the Chenab region.
Locals fearing for their security citied recent example of fresh fire incident which took place in Alindar area of Banihal in which hundreds of undergrowth bushes were destroyed. "The teams of forest department rushed to the spot in time and managed to control the flames, said locals while appreciating prompt action of forest department.
Meanwhile sources within Forest Department Banihal said that the fire started from a private land which if it not controlled in time could damage huge spread of the Forest Compartment- 43 of Forest Division Banihal.
"The teams of forest department Banihal immediately were impressed to the Job which doused the flames however the fire in low level continued till late evening, sources added.
However local sources said that the hundreds of small trees were damaged while some mature tress too got damaged in this fire incident. Officials of the forest department are trying their best to control on the fire for avoiding more loss. Sources said if this fire was not controlled earlier it can pose a great threat to forest compartment No 43 of Forest Division Banihal. The fire in the area was reportedly still on when last reports came in, sources added, adding that the area which was some eight kilometers away from the Banihal town is hilly in terrain and details are awaited.
