Jammu, Oct 8: School Olympics, the inter school sports competition which got underway at MA stadium here today is being widely hailed as an unprecedented initiative in the field of sports by Deputy Commissioner Jammu. It becomes even more special given the fact that it has been organized at an inconvenient time.
Regrettably, the State Sports Council, which was constituted on the very idea of promoting sports in the state and the J&K Olympic Association, which has the mandate to organize such competitions have not done anything in this regard in decades. In line with the initiatives of the Union Government to attract youth and children towards sports through schemes like Khelo India, the concept of organizing school Olympics was conceived by the DC Jammu Simrandeep Singh in his capacity as Chairman District Sports Council. The initiative was aimed at providing an opportunity to children of rural and urban schools to compete against one another and also to give them a feel of sports meet like Olympic Games.
In an unprecedented initiative, over 4100 school children drawn from 125 schools across Jammu, including border schools shall contest against each other in 7 disciplines including Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Football, Volleyball, Table Tennis and Kabaddi. "Organizing sports competitions is not the responsibility of the DC, who has so many important responsibilities, especially at a time of heightened tension at the borders, but DC Jammu planned it meticulously and even got the infrastructure of the selected games revamped before the competition" said an officer of the Sports Council. He however regretted that DC did not involve expert Coaches in the organization and relied on the physical Education teachers, which did not have requisite competence and capability to organize such competitions on their own. Sources revealed that the DC roped in CRPF along with Department of youth Services and Sports, Sports Council and ICICI bank for logistic support. "DC has also requested the MLAs and local officers to be part of the organization and give away prizes and medals to the winners of different events to boost their morale" they added.
Meanwhile, players drawn from rural schools are particularly very elated to be part of the event. "We started practicing soon after we got to know that DC is organizing School Olympics and we are determined to win Volleyball tournament" said Tarsem, a student from a school in Akhnoor Tehsil.
While the initiative is being appreciated by all and sundry, it is also being seen as a slap on the face of Sports Council and the J&K Olympic Association, which failed to conceive and organize such an even in decades.
