SRINAGAR, Oct 18: The state government is itself playing key role in vandalizing picturesque Sonamarg, as even after nine years, the Revenue department has failed to demarcate the state land which it had handed over to Sonamarg Development Authority (SDA).
Documents available with Early Times reveal that state government vide order No. Rev/s/256 of 2007 transferred 7674 kanals and 17 marlas of state land to SDA in 2007. The order was issued on July 25, 2007.
Documents also expose the non-seriousness of the Revenue department which has thrown all communications to dustbin. From 2010 to 2016, the Chief Executive Officer of SDA wrote 13 letters to Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal requesting him to demarcate the state land handed over to it.
With authorities repeatedly turning down all demarcation requests of the SDA, the land mafia with the patronage of politicians is openly tempering the records.
Officials at SDA told Early Times that Revenue department had demarcated just few kanals of state land at Sonamarg on which the authority has raised tourism infrastructure. However major chunk of the state land is yet to be identified by the department.
Locals alleged that some influential people have illegally occupied state land and the Revenue department is helping them by not demarcating the land.
"They have kept Sonamarg open for land mafia. Neither the illegal constructions are being stopped nor the measures for curbing the encroachment of state and forest land are being initiated which establish the fact that those departments have formed nexus to vandalize Sonamarg," sources added.
Pertinent to mention here that Early Times has reported earlier how in blatant violation of norms, constructions are going on unabated in the eco-fragile and avalanche-prone areas of Sonamarg.
Under the nose of authorities, big concrete structures are coming up on mountains slopes and forest areas on the right side after entering Sonamarg. In absence of any regulation by the authorities, some people are having a field day to vandalize the fragile environs.
Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal, Tariq Ahmad Ganie, when contacted assured timely demarcation of the state land at Sonamarg.
"We are concerned about it. I can't comment why my predecessors haven't done it from 2007 but let me assure you it will be done in a very short span of time," the Deputy Commissioner said.
"We had proposed to demarcate the land but the situation prevailing in Kashmir from last over three months didn't allow them to actually carry on the process," he added.
When asked why SDA has failed to stop illegal construction works at Sonamarg, he said, "It the SDA which has to keep a vigil and stop the constructions, but I too had a meeting with CEO, SDA and directed him to stop constructions works," he said.
