A thin line divides state BJP and separatists | | | A thin line divides the state unit of the BJP and the Kashmiri separatists as far as their stand on any elections are concerned. The state unit of the BJP holds a view similar to the separatists because the separatists do not feel that any election whether the Assembly or the civic polls or the Panchayat elections can resolve the Kashmir issue. There is one difference between the separatists and the state unit of the BJP. While the BJP claims that elections cannot resolve the Kashmir issue but they are ready to contest any election against the separatists who do not find any sense of contesting the polls because they cannot resolve the Kashmir issue That is why since 1987 elections the separatists have not indicated any urge to contest elections, whether Panchayat, civic or Assembly polls. That is a separate notion that if separatists contest elections will they win it or not ? The state unit of the BJP has said elections in the State were not meant for the political solution of Kashmir issue but for the basic amenities to the people. The BJP also said they were ready to go for any polls in the State. BJP chief spokesman and State President, Ravinder Raina said the party was ready to go for any polls in the State. The BJP is ready to start campaigning for polls, and go to public for Panchayat and Municipal elections. If the Governor dissolves the Assembly and Election Commission of India (ECI) issues notification for polls, BJP is all set to go for elections any time. "Earlier, BJP had stated that it would start campaigning for Panchayat polls from south Kashmir. The BJP feels that the restoration of democratic institutions was inevitable for which the elections were mandatory as people were suffering at gross root level in absence of basic facilities. Elections, according to the separatists are meant to provide basic requirements to people including electricity, water and roads. Here also the BJP is toeing the line of the separatists. And senior separatists, including Prof. Abdul Gani Bhat, believes that neither the Assembly elections nor the Lok Sabha polls can settle the Kashmir issue and that is the reason for "our" non-participation. These separatists are ready to call on people to boycott the Panchayat or civic elections in order to show to the world that the majority of people in Kashmir are against the restoration of any democratic process or programme on the plea they want settlement of the Kashmir issue on the basis of the UN resolutions. And Pakistan is keen to hold a plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir for resolving the Kashmir issue. Will India accept this demand? Possibilities seem to be remote on the plea that India treats the UN resolutions obsolete and that too when Pakistan did not withdraw all its troops from Occupied Kashmir which was mandatory, as provided in the UN resolutions, before holding any plebiscite. |
