Jammu, Jan 5: National Conference President Omar Abdullah was today sworn in as the youngest Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, ending six months of governor's rule in the state.
Abdullah, 38, scion of the first political family of Jammu and Kashmir, took oath along with nine ministers, including Tara Chand of the Congress as his deputy. Congress President Saonia Gandhi, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, several senior political leaders and leading industrialists of the country were among those witnessed the swearing in ceremony.
After Omar Abdullah, Tara Chand of the Congress was the first to take oath. He is the Deputy Chief Minister as per National Conference-Congress coalition government though a formal notification to this effect was yet to be issued by the Chief Minister.
Besides Omar, of the nine Ministers sworn in today, four were from National Conference and five from the Congress.

Jammu, Jan 5: Immediately after being sworn as new Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah cautioned political parties against playing "divisive politics" that divides people on communal or regional lines, saying it could further complicate the situation in the border state.
"The state is overcoming a bad phase of divisive politics and I am sure that this phase will be over soon," said the Chief Minister.

Jammu, Jan 5: At least 10 militants are believed to be holding out in concrete bunkers by reinforcing the existing natural caves, as their encounter with the security forces in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir entered the fifth day on Monday during when two jawans were injured.
An intense gunbattle continued with Army troops firing rockets and mortars targeting the militants' cave hideouts in Bhati Dhar forest area near the Line of Control(LoC) in Mendhar tehsil of Poonch district, defence sources said.

Srinagar, Jan 5: A quake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale rocked the summer capital and other parts of the Valley in Jammu and Kashmir today, second time during the past 24 hours, forcing people to run out of their houses.
The tremors, which were felt at 0443 hrs, lasted about several seconds.
Despite biting cold outside, people rushed out of their homes to take shelter in open space in panic as the entire region falls in the most earthquake prone Zone-5.
A weather office spokesman said this morning the tremblor was epicentered at 36.60 degrees north latitude and 71.0 degrees east longitude in Hindukush mountain range in Afghanistan.

Vohra, today issued a Proclamation to revoke an earlier Proclamation, issued by him on 10th July 2008, in exercise of powers conferred on him by Section 92 of the Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir, whereby he had assumed all the functions of the Government of the State.
According to a Raj Bhavan Spokesman, the Governor issued the Proclamation before swearing in the new Council of Ministers headed by Mr. Omar Abdullah, here this afternoon, bringing to an end the period of Governor’s Rule in Jammu and Kashmir which had commenced on 10th July 2008.
