Mufti Sayeed is in PM's Kashmir think-tank
10/12/2006 7:52:29 PM
B L KAK NEW DELHI, OCT. 12: The cat is out of the bag: Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, esprit de corps of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, has undertaken a "crucial" assignment aimed at wooing Kashmiri masses with a new settlement formula. Following his unpublished inclusion in the Prime Minister's think-tank on Jammu and Kashmir, the Mufti's significant achievement is the Union government's "indirect" support to his intensifed talk in favour of self-governance mechanism in his homeland. Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, has not opposed Mufti Sayeed's new Kashmir settlement formula--that is, self-governance. And the Congress president and c...

Tirumala temple has over 10 lakh Hindus every year
10/12/2006 7:52:01 PM
SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT NEW DELHI, OCT. 12: Well over 10 lakh Hindus every year walk the hallowed halls of the Tirumala temple in Tirupati, seeking that all-potent glimpse of Lord Venkateshwara. The temple in Andhra Pradesh is nestled within seven sacred hills. Devotees have been helping Lord Balaji pay his debt to kuber with their donations for nearly two centuries. However, being the richest temple in the world-- is not its only claim to fame. What gives the tirumalay devasthanam a unique status of reverence among Hindus is the practice of Kalyana Katta or head shaving. Kalyana Katta is a symbolic gesture of surrendering one's ego to God. 500 barbers cut hair of 10,000 devote...

Musharraf's political maneuvering will continue
10/12/2006 7:51:34 PM
B L KAK NEW DELHI: God is great. Pakistan President, Gen. Parvez Musharraf, is also great. By his God's grace Gen. Musharraf has just completed seven years as his country's ruler. And seven years after he toppled an elected government, Pakistan finds itself hedged to a political system through which the military controls the nation’s destiny and the generals’ superiority over the elected, civilian leadership has been formalised. The Army Chief is also the head of state, and he, not the Prime Minister, Shaukat Aziz, heads Pakistan's highest policymaking body — the National Security Council. In theory, of course, there is a democratic system in place — a lower house elected on the...
