State cabinet at its meeting here today cleared the name of BR Kundal for the post of Chief Secretary. C.Phunsog, the outgoing Chief Secretary, was meanwhile, appointed as adviser to the Government.
As per a cabinet order Kundal will take over as Chief Secretary from November 1.After being named as next CS, Kumdal is reported to have expressed, “I am happy as the Government has placed an important responsibility on my shoulders.” He said he would ensure that the working in all Government departments, including the civil secretariat, remained transparent. Principal District Judge Jammu JR Kotwal today in a suit for recovery of Rs 2 crore filed by former Miss-Jammu Anara Gupta for illegal confinement for a period of 11 days, issued fresh summons against Bansi Lal and Darbari Lal constables whereas on behalf of other respondents advocates filed their vakaltnamas. The court also fixed December 12 for hearing of the case.
The suit was filed by Anara for recovery of damages caused to her by the respondents named in the petition because of her arrest and keeping her in illegal confinement for a period of 11 days besides subjecting her to severe physical as well as mental torture. The petition also said that ... | |

Former Forest Minister and Minister for Housing and Urban Development Qazi Mohammad Afzal today stayed away from the cabinet meeting, which also witnessed some heated arguments between Finance Minister Tariq Hameed Qarra and Health Minister Mangat Ram Sharma, forcing the former to leave the meeting midway.
Sources revealed that Afzal did not participate in the cabinet meeting despite the recent clarification by the Chief Minister's Secretariat that he continues to hold the portfolio of Housing and Urban Development department.

About 100 villagers were injured when a massive fire swept through a remote village in Kishtwar district gutting 160 hutments, police said today.
The fire, which broke out in Margie village of Warwan area last night, gutted 160 mud and wooden structures.
About 100 villagers sustained injuries while trying to extinguish the fire as there was no fire fighting mechanism in the remote village, they said, adding choppers are being arranged to shift the injured to hospitals either at Anantnag or Kishtwar.
