NC on weak wicket, cannot afford sitting out of power | After Omar Abdullah's 34 month in power! | | Syed Junaid Hashmi
JAMMU, Oct 28: Contrary to popular perception of National Conference (NC) withdrawing support if New Delhi decides to replace Omar Abdullah, the party leading the coalition presently has no option but to continue in power.
Old guards of National Conference (NC) which includes former Chief Minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah may threaten of withdrawing support but are unlikely to do so, owing to presence of credible, vociferous and vocal opposition, Peoples Democratic Party which has footprints across the state. PDP is major regional threat to NC in Kashmir valley. Elsewhere, Congress has already uprooted NC's base.
Barring few pockets of support in the outskirts of Jammu district especially in Rajouri and Poonch districts, National Conference (NC) has been almost wiped out by PDP and Congress. Despite being embroiled in cash-for-vote scam, BJP has sizeable vote bank in Hindu dominated areas of Jammu region. This vote may not win them seats but would be sufficient to ensure victory of Congress candidates in near future.
Old guards of NC do accept that party has lost...

| | Omar trying to kill three birds with one stone | | |
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 28: By raking up the issue of repeal of AFSPA from some areas of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, is trying to kill two birds with one stone. Possibly, he aims at hitting three birds with one stone.
It is all a game of politics of vote bank and hence he is ready to measure muscles not only with the opposition but with the Congress that shares power with his National Conference in the state. By demonstrating his eagerness to do away with DAA and the AFSPA, Omar Abdullah plans to pull the rug under the PDP feet.
He feels upset over the way the PDP has grown in size and strength in the state, especially in the Kashmir valley. He has fears th...

| | Kamal, Omar unite the divided Congress? | Major Political Development | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 28: The state unit of the Congress was in a bad shape till the other day. Almost everyone had written its obituary opining that it had become irrelevant because it had allowed itself to be guided, controlled and directed by the NC.
Congress-watchers had, without any exception, expressed the view that it was no more than a B-team of the NC and that the electorate of the state would reject it outright in the next elections, when held. Significantly, this was also the view of the bulk of the local Congress leaders and workers operating at the grass-roots level.
They belonged to that school of thought that vouched for the 2002 power-sharing formula between it ...

| | Soz snubs Omar for ignoring Congress, Omar says Chidambaram briefed | Revoking AFSPA | | Rustam
JAMMU, Oct 28: Is Omar Abdullah on his way out? If the bitter public spat between the JKPCC chief, Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz, and the NC leader and Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, over the sensitive issue of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) is to be given any credence, then the answer is in the affirmative.
Prof Soz was so upset over the Omar's style of working, as also over his negative attitude towards the JKPCC that he on Thursday openly challenged Omar Abdullah to revoke the AFSPA before the civil secretariat reopens in Jammu in the first week of November. His attack on Omar was scathing.
It could be seen from his statement that "Omar is not standing on a strong ground" ...
| | Congress undermining our effort; we will not consult it, asserts Kamal | Height of arrogance | | Neha
JAMMU, Oct 28: Newly-appointed additional general secretary and chief spokesperson of the NC Sheikh Mustafa Kamal is hardening his stand on the Army and the Congress by the day and demonstrating his arrogance.
He is trying to create an impression in the state and elsewhere in the country that the only role of the Congress in the state is to lick the NC shoes and obey its instructions and directions as an obedient servant. He is, in addition, becoming more and more critical of the armed forces involved in anti-insurgency operations and combating terrorism. He has, to be more exact, revolted against the Congress and the Army.
