Early Times Special Correspondent Jammu | Nov 12 "Like happiness being occasional interlude in the general drama of pain" democratic elected governments have been quite short lived in Pakistan which has been under military dictatorships for 32 years, of 60 years of its creation. The remaining 28 years under civilian rules too have witnessed overthrow of elected governments with nominated Prime Ministers and Presidents ruling the country. How long has Pakistan been under military dictatorship since its independence? Pakistan became independent on August 14, 1947. But it was only in 1956 that it became a republic with the adoption of the first constitution of Pakistan. In 60 years of its independence, Pakistan has been under military rule for over 32 years. Soon after it became a republic, general Ayub Khan seized power in a bloodless coup in October 1958. Pakistan set to ban Bhutto protest
11/12/2007 8:01:58 PM
Islamabad | Nov 12 Authorities in Pakistan are set to ban a huge protest march called by opposition leader Benazir Bhutto to demand an immediate end to emergency rule, officials said on Monday. Government officials and police were to meet to consider banning Tuesday's planned rally from Lahore to Islamabad, and senior police sources said it was unlikely to be allowed. The so-called "long march" is aimed at piling pressure on President Pervez Musharraf to end the state of emergency, which Bhutto said would make promised general elections by early January meaningless. "There will be no long march," a senior government official in Punjab, the province which includes Lahore, said. Raja Bas...

Fly over - a death trap
Departments pass buck on each other
11/12/2007 7:59:14 PM
Vikas Sharma Jammu | Nov 12 While the much talked about fly over in Jammu city has failed to ease traffic pressure on the existing roads, it has virtually become a death trap for the people traveling on the vehicles on it due to the rash and unmindful driving. During the last two months alone four persons lost their lives while a dozen others sustained injuries due to the negligent and fast driving. The concerned departments responsible for maintaining the flyover and regulating the traffic on it have been blaming each other for unplanned design of the fly over causing more problems than solving the ever growing traffic jams in the city of temples.
