Pak unrest culminates into emergency

Islamabad | Nov 03 After months of speculation, President Musharraf has declared emergency in Pakistan. The decision was taken at a high level meeting attended by President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz. The decision comes in the wake of growing attacks by extremists and a speculated breakdown of understanding with Benazir Bhutto. Musharraf is likely to address the nation later tonight. The government has dismissed Chief Justice Iftikhar Choudhary saying his services were no longer needed. All opposition lawmakers have resigned and a caretaker government will take over after seven days. All judges, who were holding a separate meeting in the Supreme Court along with the Attorney General, were being escorted out by the Army, which has entered the court premises. Several lawyers and political leaders have been taken into custody. It is believed that an eight-member bench had termed the decision to impose emergency as illegal and declared it null and void. Early Times Reporter Jammu | Nov 3 Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad who was away in Saudi Arabia performing Umrah will be returning to Delhi Sunday morning and will reach Jammu in the evening, official sources said. Azad had left for Saudi Arabia on October 29 to perform Umrah and therefore this year no celebrations were scheduled on completion of his two years in office. Early Times Reporter Jammu | Nov 3 Six persons, including two Hizbul Mujahideen militants and a girl, were killed in separate incidents in Jammu and Kashmir, police said today. Based on specific information about presence of militants, security forces launched a search operation at Nihal-Pattan village on Srinagar-Baramulla highway last night. When the militants fired on the troops, the security men retaliated and in the ensuing gun battle, the two militants were killed, they said. Early Times Reporter Jammu | Nov 3 The Civil Secretariat and other related offices of the State government, under the biannual Darbar Move practice, will be opened here from Monday. The Civil Secretariat and other government offices had closed on October 26 at the summer capital, Srinagar. Early Times Reporter Jammu | Nov 3 The Jammu and Kashmir government has ordered a magisterial probe of the case in which a Pakistani national had managed to secure government jobs to four of his family members in bordering district of Rajouri.
