Politics of troop reduction with election year around in J-K

Early Times Reporter Jammu | Dec 30 With assembly elections round the corner, politics took centre stage in militancy-hit Jammu and Kashmir in 2007 as coalition partners Congress and PDP squabbled over issues like troop reduction and withdrawal of special laws. Militancy, which plagued the state's economy for several years, was put on the back burner though terrorists made their presence felt by sporadic killings of domestic tourists and planned suicide attacks on Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and National Conference President Omar Abdullah. Human rights violations were dealt with severely as 12 police personnel including an SSP were booked for allegedly killing an innocent in custody and labelling him a foreign mercenary, while the 2006 Kashmir sex scandal came back to haunt the high and mighty again this year. The year began with PDP raising its stakes in the political arena by demanding reduction of troops and repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act. Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Dec 30 Alarmed over deteriorating condition of river Jhelum because of polluted water and encroachment on its banks, the Jammu and Kashmir government has prepared an ambitious project to restore the pristine glory of the river. Also called Vitasta, originating from Verinag in south Kashmir and going to Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) before passing through historic Lal Chowk and other towns, the Kashmiri Hindus consider it as an incarnation of the Goddess Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva. Lucknow | Dec 30 The five Harkat-ul-Jehadi Islamia militants, who were arrested in connection with the serial blasts in Uttar Pradesh courts, have told the interrogators that they wanted to teach the state's lawyers a lesson for manhandling their outfit members. Mohammad Khalid, Tariq, Sajjad Wani, Tariq alias Akhtar and Altaf Ansari alias Mukhtiar alias Raju told the interrogators that three courts - Lucknow, Faizabad and Varanasi - were chosen as targets after conducting recce, sources said. Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Dec 30 The overall security situation in Jammu and Kashmir has improved considerably with the number of militancy related incidents, killings of civilians and security force personnel coming down as compared to previous years. However, the Jammu and Kashmir police has sacrificed 1320 personnel during counter-insurgency operations since the eruption of militancy in early nineties.
