| Neither good politics, nor good economics, still ok | | Politicians, Economists Debate Omar’s Job Policy | | |
ZAFAR CHOUDHARY
Jammu, Dec 6: Politicians say it is not a good politics, economists say it is not a good economics –the ambitious employment policy of the National Conference led government will have to bear tests of the times before it can be called as a historic initiative.
A day after the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced the mega-employment policy, the reactions coming in are not entirely unexpected but there are technical and policy points which are being debated. Arguably, it is third time in the state that an allowance based job policy has been formulated. The first such is reported to have come from Syed Mir Qasim in early 1970s and the second during first tenure of Dr Farooq Abdullah in early in 1980s when he created such a provision for Engineers.
It is not unusual for the opposition parties to criticise what the governments do and the criticism coming in is not out of place. | Hearing in CIC case today
Early Times Special
Jammu, Dec 6: Raj Dev Sharma, a resident of Akhnoor, is expected to appear in person on Monday to argue his case against the appointment of Wajahat Habibullah as the Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) of Jammu & Kashmir.
Mr Sharma’s contention is that Mr Habibullah cannot be the CIC under the Jammu & Kashmir Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2009. The J&K Act is similar to the Central Act but the legislators have tweaked it here and there, changing its language somewhat.
What this means is that the J&K RTI Act is not the same as Central Act which applies elsewhere. Under Section 3 of the Act, the applicability of the RTI Act has been defined and it says: ``Subjec...

The 39th Mountain Division has been withdrawn from Rajouri and Poonch to its base in Palampur in Himachal Pradesh. "This division has been withdrawn and it has reached its base in HP," the officer said. The shifting of the divisi...

Srinagar, Dec 6: Fazal Haq Qureshi, the separatist leader who was seriously injured when unidentified gunmen shot at him in Srinagar on Friday evening, remained in a critical condition, said a group of doctors after examining him on Sunday morning.
"There is no deterioration in Qureshi's condition and his vital parameters are functioning, but he continues to be critical. He has been on life-support in the intensive care unit," a senior doctor said.
Militants shot Qureshi, who is in favour of talks with the Centre to resolve the Kashmir issue, while he was returning home after offering evening prayers at the local mosque.
