flags were votes the National Conference has won the initial battle against its political foes in Jammu and Kashmir.This was evident when the city of temples wore a festive look with the red NC flags fluttering on each main rotaries,road arteries and on buses and matadors on Thursday when the National Conference demonstrated its strength by holding a massive public rally in the parade grounds.
“Omar hamari jaan hein,farooq hamari shaan hein”(Omar is our life and Farooq is our honour) slogans embossed on banners attracted peoples’ attention.It was a colourful show.People atop buses and matadors,carrying plough engraved red flags,shouting full-throated slogans were seen making it to the parade grounds.The passenger transport system was affected when several hundred buses and matadors,carrying party supporters and workers,moving on the Jammu roads caused traffic jams.

| Omar suggests Azad to resign if centre sides with Mufti on troop cut | | | | Jammu, March 29
National Conference Chief Omar Abdullah on Thursday advised Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to immediately resign from his post and not to return home from New Delhi if centre did not listen to his viewpoint on the issue of troop cut.
“Azad sahib you have discussed the issue in separate meetings with Prime Minister and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and now I advise you not to return home if centre decides to back PDP patron Mufti Mohd Sayeed’s viewpoint on the contentious issue sidelining your viewpoint".

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has officially recomended circumcision as a way to prevent heterosexual transmission of the AIDS virus, setting the stage for donor agencies to begin paying for the operation. According to reports received in New Delhi, the WHO acted after the clinical trials in Kenya, Uganda and South Africa, overseen by the national health agencies of the United States and France, found that male circumcision reduced the risk of infection of men through heterosexual sex by about 60 per cent.

Three persons were sentenced to life imprisonment by a court here today for lynching three members of a Sikh family during riots that followed the assassination of prime minister Indira Gandhi in 1984.
"Killing of innocent persons due to communal reasons is an indelible blot in the history of human civilisation," said Additional Sessions Judge Rajender Kumar Shastri, terming the carnage as "a virtual holocaust in independent India".
Shastri, however, rejected the prosecution's contention that the case falls in the "rarest of rare" category and warranted the death sentence for the convicts -- Harprasad Bharadwaj, R P Tiwari and Jagdish Giri.

An "informal" meeting of Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) was held here today to discuss the issue of troop reduction and relocation in Jammu and Kashmir.
The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and attended by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Home Minister Shivraj Patil and Defence Minister A K Antony.
"This was an informal CCS meeting," Information and Broadcasting Minister P R Dasmunsi told reporters when asked about the outcome of the meeting.
