Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today turned entered the 59th year of his life. An early morning phone call from the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and a visit with a bouquet by the Governor SK Sinha was all that the Chief Minister had as birthday special.
The Information Department went on say that the Chief Minister does not believe in celebrations and kept him busy for the entire day attending the public problems. Police on Friday unearthed a hawala racket and arrested three revenue officials in Rajouri district, official sources said.
Acting on a tip off, police raided a hideout in Kandi village of Bhudal tehsil early on Friday and recovered over Rs one lakh of hawala money to be delivered to a self-styled commander of United Jehad Council (UJC), a conglomeration of militants outfits, they said.
Those arrested have been identified as Zulfikhar Ahmed, Mohmmad Qadir and Rehman, they said, adding the trio admitted that the money was to be delivered to the UJC commander.

Taking advantage of the piquant situation created by the indefinite strike by the workers and employees of J&K SRTC, which has now entered 18th day, paralyzing the transport service of SRTC, the transporters in the private sector have upped their ante for hike in the fares of all modes of transport. Citing increase in the rates of fuel, rupee one per litre for diesel and rupees two per litre for petrol, the transporters have been demanding revision of fares of all modes of local transport, including buses, mini buses and even auto rickshaws.

Despite making a commitment on the floor of the House, the state government is no mood to order a CBI inquiry into the killing of former Minister and Peoples Democratic Party leader Dr Ghulam Nai Lone.
Following serious allegations raised by independent legislator from Sangrama and son of the slain Minister, the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad had announced in January 14 in the legislative assembly that a CBI inquiry will be instituted to investigate the assassination of Dr Ghulam Nabi Lone. It is going to be nearly two months since then but the government has not made a formal request to CBI to take over the case.
