TOP STORY OF THE DAY
NC, Cong loggerheads on transfer of civil & police officers
Matter deferred to June 17 Cabinet meeting
6/11/2014 11:46:54 PM
Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, June 11: The much expected transfers of officers in the civil and police administration could not take place in today's Cabinet meeting as differences crept up among the Ministers of ruling coalition over this important agenda of Cabinet meeting that was chaired by Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah. Sources told Early Times that as soon as the agenda of the transfers was taken up there were differences between the Ministers of National Conference and Congress. The basic reason for the fight between the Ministers was over the placement of a senior cop as overall in-charge of security for the Kashmir division. Sources said that there was no consensus between the two sides and as such the decision about the placement of top cop could not be taken. The disagreement on the initial point of the agenda for transfers meant that the subsequent list of transfers of civil and police officers could not be taken up. "Given the recent debacle in the Lok Sabha elections it was expected that both National Conference and Congress would evolve consensus over the transfers...

KU shuts door on Drabu
6/11/2014 11:46:40 PM
Bashir Assad SRINAGAR, June 11: In an environment where Kashmir youth already face squeezed avenues of growth and opportunity, the Kashmir University administration has denied a chance to its students to interact with some of the best minds on the Kashmir soil, only to keep the political establishment happy. LEHAR, an NGO, had proposed to the university authorities last month to organize a seminar. The NGO had duly informed the university authorities that Haseeb Drabu, an economist, would interact with the students. This would enable the students to look beyond the ordinary, and broaden their horizons of thought. In addition to interaction with Drabu, the students would also get a ch...

Azad indecisive about returning to state politics
Not Afzal hanging, coalition failed on development, corruption issues
6/11/2014 11:46:31 PM
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, June 11: As the speculations galore over his re-entry into the state politics former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad remarked that he is still indecisive about it and has taken any decision in this regard so far. Talking to a news agency Rajya Sabha member and former MP Ghulam Nabi Azad stated that he will take the decision of joining the state politics in the coming months and that he has no taken any final call on the issue yet. "I have neither discussed nor decided on this issue so far. Probably after the month of Ramadan, I will decide whether to join the state politics or not," Azad said. Contradicting the claim of Chief Minister Omar A...

Omar still unaware of causes responsible for LS defeat
NC is doomed?
6/11/2014 11:46:16 PM
Rustam jammu, June 11: It was 25 days ago that the Election Commission of India announced the Lok Sabha election results. The BJP and NDA were the clear winners and the Congress-led UPA and other "secular" outfits came out of the exercise minus everything. The electorate rejected outrightly almost all the "secular" parties and formations like the Congress-led UPA of which the NC was, and continues to be, a part. The NC, like the BSP, DMK, RLD and so on, got completely decimated. It failed to open its account even in the Kashmir valley considered to be its constituency. Ironically, the NC leadership is still unaware of the causes which resulted in its debacle. 25 days is not a small period...

J&K Govt yet to begin geological investigation of NH-1B
Jammu-Doda-Kishtwar road
6/11/2014 11:46:00 PM
Syed Junaid Hashmi JAMMU, June 11: Despite being slide-prone, slippery and accident prone; Jammu and Kashmir Government is yet to order geological investigation and fresh feasibility survey of National Highway-1B, which connects Doda-Kishtwar region with rest of the country. Call it ignorance of those at the helm of affairs in the NC-Congress coalition Government or non-seriousness of the four sitting Ministers who represent erstwhile District Doda in the state as well as Union Ministry but the fact remains that none has so far even issued a handout to express seriousness towards addressing the issue of National Highway-1B having become death trap for those travelling on it. Earlier, it ...

Farooq cracks crude jokes
Talks about Kashmiri nationalism, demographic changes
6/11/2014 11:45:41 PM
ET Report SRINAGAR, June 11: National Conference Party President Dr. Farooq Abdullah today tried to play the communal card by shedding crocodile tears over so-called demographic changes in the state. Surprisingly he talked about Kashmiri nationalism. Farooq has always talked about validity of accession, Indian nationalism. The only time he challenged accession was in 2007 while releasing a book at Jammu. That time Farooq was in opposition. Today he talked about Kashmiri nationalism when he is recovering from the shock of losing an important election to a junior. Farooq also cracked a crude joke when he said the destiny of the state was connected with the destiny of NC. Farooq, perha...

6/11/2014 11:08:49 PM
Kunal Shrivatsa JAMMU, June 11: In a bid to revive its sagging fortunes in the state after the drubbing it received in the parliamentary polls, the Congress leadership in J&K is likely to undertake certain initiatives which are not akin to the traditions and nature of the grand old party of the country. Reliable sources within Congress told Early Times that following party's poor showing in the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls, the party hierarchy which include Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief Prof Saif-ud-din Soz and senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad held separate interactions with the grass root level workers to get feedback on the reasons of party's debacle in the sta...

Modi and internally-displaced Kashmiri Hindus
Presidential address on return issue evokes a mixed response
6/11/2014 10:47:29 PM
Neha JAMMU, June 11: It was in early 1990 that the miniscule minority of Kashmiri Hindus quit their land of Vitasta (Jhelum). The community migrated out of Kashmir to save its culture, religion, dignity and honour, as also to escape persecution and physical liquidation at the hands of Pakistan-sponsored, abetted, aided and indoctrinated zealots. They would have stayed put in Kashmir had the Union Government not raised its hands or had it resolved to defeat and neutralize the onslaught that was calculated to detach Kashmir from New Delhi and merge it with theocratic, dictatorial, feudalistic, intolerant and regressive Pakistan, an irresponsible non-state. The migration of the minority c...

6/11/2014 10:47:09 PM
Arun Singh JAMMU, June 11: Slackness on the part of state government in disposing of pending land acquisition cases under Pradhan Manti Gram Sadak Yojna (PMGSY) scheme can be gauged from the fact that as against Rs 146.78 crore released by the PMGSY organization in favour of six district collectors, Rs 34.61 crore is still unutilized. Sources told Early Times that centre Government had approved Rs 577 crore under Prime Minister's Reconstruction Programme (PMRP) during 2004-05 for acquisition of land for the construction of 907 road projects in the State under the programme.
