Cabinet expansion: PDP, Cong lockhorns again
8/8/2006 8:57:53 PM
Jammu, August 08 : The row between the major allies peoples democratic party(PDP) and congress over the chief Minister’s statement in legislative Assembly claiming sharp decline in Human Right Violation and violence during his eight months in office has resulted in the postponement of much awaited cabinet expansion. Sources in power corridors revealed that continuous hip ups between the main coalition allies has once again put the cabinet expansion on the back burner, that was scheduled for this week. The names of those to be roped in the new cabinet was to be finalized soon after the conclusion of the session but chief ministers statement in the house deepened the already existing cracks with in the coalition particularly between Peoples Democratic Party and congress, sources added. PDP had already given the names of six MLA’s as per the share but chief minister had not yet agreed upon the number which was to be finalized only after the session. The two main allies had already some differences over the number of MLA’s to be taken in from congress associate group and panther’s...

India-Pakistan quarrel unlikely to end soon
8/8/2006 6:45:53 PM
B L KAK NEW DELHI, AUG. 8: In a swift turn of events, Pakistan has, following its serious diplomatic row with India, put on alert its troops and paramilitary Rangers close to the frontier with India. According to these reports, the mood of the average Pak soldier across the Jammu and Kashmir frontier has suddenly changed--from peaceful to aggressive. These reports have also made a reference to the "sudden" movement of military personnel and vehicles in Skardu region across Kargil f...

Beggar mafia-doctor nexus
Authorites dragging their feet on the issue
8/8/2006 6:45:33 PM
SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT NEW DELHI, AUG. 8: It has been a week since a private television channel, CNN-IBN, exposed the beggar mafia-doctor nexus and caught some doctors on-camera willing to amputate beggars’ limbs in exchange for a paltry sum. The expose created a storm both in medical circles and in Parliament where powers that be criticised the gruesome practice and called for strict action. But despite promising action, authorities seem to be dragging their feet on the issue with the concerned doctors still roaming free. In the impact that followed the expose, Dr Bansal was picked up for questioning by the Delhi police only to be let off later. The Indian Medical Associa...

8/8/2006 6:45:16 PM
EARLY TIMES DELHI BUREAU NEW DELHI, AUG. 8: Age and physical weakness do not fail them when it comes to iron-like determination to achieve their goal — to go on Haj pilgrimage on bycycle to the holy city of Makkah in Saudi Arabia. The is what a group of seven Hyderabadis have proved as they set out on a thousands of miles long journey on bicycles to perform Haj. A report received from Hyderabad sxaid that the group led by 60-year-old Mohammed Haneef, has elderly members, youngest of them being 42- year- old Mohammed Rafeeq. All of them are auto rickshaw drivers, who gathered their meagre resources and received some help from well wishers to embark upon a journey, which will take t...

Nehru's constituency lost on Cong. map
8/8/2006 6:44:51 PM
SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT NEW DELHI, AUG. 8: If Phulpur in Uttar Pradesh (UP) elected India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, today's Congress high command finds it necessary to accord greater attention to the parliamentary constituencies of Sonia Gandhi and her son, Rahul Gandhi. The Congress party has launched its 'Quit Mulayam' campaign in UP. But Nehru's constituency (Phulpur) is now lost on the Congress map. And it matters little in any political equation. Nehru won the polls hands down from Phulpur in 1957and 1962. Some visitors to the Phulpur village have found that the face of Congress there is wrinkled, old and quivering. A frail frame emerging from the ruins of...
