J&K CM seeks presidential clemency for Md Afzal

New Delhi, September 29, According to reports, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for sympathetic consideration of Mohammad Afzal's mercy petition. Seeking Presidential clemency for the Parliament attack plotter, Azad cited the public sentiment in the Valley against the verdict. The two leaders met on the sidelines of the chief ministers' conclave in Chandigarh. Political parties in Kashmir have called for a bandh on Friday to protest the Supreme Court verdict. Afzal has been convicted in the 2001 Parliament attack case and is to be hanged on October 20. Meanwhile, thirty separatists were detained and Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani was placed under house arrest as protests over upcoming execution of Mohammad Afzal in a Parliament attack case rocked Kashmir valley for the third straight day today. ‘ SRINAGAR, SEPTEMBER 29 – Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad today rushed to cut-off village Bungam, Qaderna in Marwah tehsil where 24 houses were gutted as a result of which 200 people of 40 families have lost their properties. Srinagar, Sep 29 : The death verdict to Muhammad Afzal Guru provoked protest demonstration across Kashmir region for the third consecutive day on Friday, while the normal life was thrown out of gear in Srinagar, summer capital of the state, where people observed a complete shut down in response to a call given by various separatists’ organizations. Srinagar, September 29 :-Notwithstanding its climb down in imposing conditions for ceasefire the latest offer from Hizbul Mujahideen outfit is unlikely to be accepted by the Government of India.
