| BJP activists blame leadership for humiliating defeat | | | early times report
JAMMU, Dec 6: Though the outcome of MLC elections under Panchayat quota was already known that the ruling alliance will win all the four seats so no one was surprised over the victory of four coalition candidates two each from National Conference (NC) and Congress. However, the elections have given a jolt to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and indicated that the state leadership of the party lacks the acumen to lead party at hustings. The BJP which had fielded two candidates from Jammu region which once upon a time was strong bastion of the Party but its candidates suffered a humiliating defeat from the region. Though BJP may assign reasons that all opposition parties including PDP and NPP were defeated in the election but one question which needs an explanation from state BJP leadership is that why it failed to launch a vigorous campaign as the ruling alliance did. The Congress NC leaders including the ministers taking the elections as a challenge fought them unitedly while BJP leaders were seen fighting among themselves. According to sources to outwit each other BJP leadership distanced some senior leaders Election Committee and a coterie working round the party leadership spoiled the poll prospects of the two candidates. Instead of launching a vigorous campaign by holding corner meetings with Panchs and Sarpanchs except a few BJP leadership tried to remain indoors, sources, said adding they failed to even contact the disgruntled Panchs and Sarpanchs who had publicly announced to vote against the coalition. Sources said that instead of visiting the different localities in Jammu region, the BJP leaders only held press conferences one after the another accusing the coalition of misusing the official machinery and violating the code of conduct instead of making contacts with Panchs and Sarpanchs. Depending on the coterie the party leaders toed the same line which they adopted during the campaigning and repeatedly indulged in levelling allegations against the alliance instead of sending its cadres in different parts of the region highlighting the party's policies and programme regarding empowerment of Sarpanchs and Panchs, sources said. Sources said the two candidates found themselves alone during the campaigning as some senior leaders were not interested in their victory as this would in turn lessen the importance of these leaders in the Party. This was the main reason that BJP gave a field to coalition during the campaigning. Otherwise when Congress and NC Ministers including Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and PCC Prof President, Prof. Saif-ud-Din Soz campaigned during these elections for alliance candidates why could not the senior BJP leaders do the same is a question being asked by every disgruntled BJP activist in the state. Sources said soon after the outcome of results some senior activists contacted top brass of party leadership in New Delhi and apprised them of the happenings. They have sought immediate overhauling of the state leadership by projecting the genuine and selfless leaders in the party if the BJP is interested to save its skin in the state. The sources said these activists have apprised the senior leaders in New Delhi that the negative role played by state leadership was the main reason for Party's humiliating defeat otherwise BJP could have managed at least one seat from Jammu. |
