12/7/2012 12:00:05 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, Dec 6 : Elated over the "thumping victory" of the NC-Congress alliance in the four seats of Legislative Council, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah thanked panchayat members for giving a clear cut message to the opposition which had indulged in "malicious" propaganda.
"It is an effective reply to the detractors of coalition. Overwhelming victory of coalition candidates is heavy jolt to those (PDP leadership) who indulged in malicious propaganda against the coalition and tried their best to create a wedge between the workers of Congress and National Conference at grass root," Omar said.
He congratulated panches, sarpanches and party cadres of National Conference and Congress parties for ensuring thumping victory for all the four coalition candidates in the elections to Legislative Council seats reserved for panchayats in the state. "Your real test will be in 2014," Omar said and told the workers to show same spirit and determination during the next Assembly polls.
Speaking to a jubilant group of village heads and party workers of NC and Congress, who arrived at his residence with two winning candidates, Omar said the workers of both the parties deserve applaud "for giving clear cut message to their detractors that the coalition is as strong at the grass-roots as it is at the top level."
"Your victory is an appropriate reply to those (PDP leadership) who remained engaged in false propaganda that NC-Congress coalition was not effective and cohesive at the lower level," he said.
He said that the whole-hearted support of panches and sarpanches to coalition candidates has also nullified their (PDP leadership) propaganda that panchayat members have fallen apart from coalition partners.
"They (PDP leadership) tried their utmost to create confusion in the minds of panches and sarpanches and let loose unabated and malicious propaganda but failed miserably," he said. Omar also cautioned the workers against being complacent after the the victory.
"Work hard and be closely associated with each other and with the common people in every area and at all levels," he emphasised and said that workers of NC and Congress have to further strengthen coalition and have to stand "like a rock against the propagandist elements".
Omar expressed confidence that victorious coalition candidates would work hard to strengthen panchayat system and ensure its growth.
"I am confident that the winning candidates will devote their full attention towards welfare and empowerment of panches and sarpanches in the House and outside," he said.
The chief minister said the process of transferring funds, functions and functionaries to panchayat institutions will receive considerable fillip in the coming months.
He said coalition government would fulfil its commitment for a powerful and effective three-tier panchayat system in the state.
Omar referred to the efforts of Pradesh Congress chief Saifuddin Soz and Union minister Gulam Nabi Azad in ensuring the victory. He said he and Soz Sahib jointly addressed rallies of panches and sarpanches across the state.
The chief minister also congratulated the NC-Congress workers and leaders on behalf of NC president, Farooq Abdullah.
