Oxford Dictionary Quiz, 2012 held in DPS Jammu

Jammu, Dec 8-Delhi Public School Jammu in collaboration with Oxford University Press organized Oxford Dictionary Quiz 20 12 today to mark 100 years in India in the premises of school. This one of its kind quiz has been organized for the first time in North India. To mark 2012 as the centenary year for Oxford University Press India, a series of Oxford Centenary Quizzes are being organized across the country. Oxford Quiz on Shakespeare and Oxford Dictionary Quiz will reach out to students in key cities across India.
Oxford Dictionary Quiz is based on the Oxford English Dictionaries, which have been there for more than 150 years. The Oxford English Dictionaries are regarded as an accepted authority in English language. They are an unsurpassed guide to the meaning, history, and pronunciation of words - from across the English-speaking world.
Over a hundred schools were invited to participate in this unique event. The contestants competed for prizes from Oxford University Press India, of which the grand prize was an Oxford Dictionary Quiz Trophy. A work of art crafted in silver, it is designed to look like a Dictionary. Besides the trophy there were many other prizes for winners, runners up, and members of the audience who answered questions during the audience rounds.
The quiz was in two parts - starting with a written preliminary test followed by a stage round for top six teams, based on their scores in the written test. The quiz ended with a high-impact buzzer round where the twists and turns of the format finally revealed the winner.
The quiz was attended by many educators, teachers and students exploring their knowledge. Earlier the programme began with lighting of the lamp.
Ranjan Kaul, Managing Director, Oxford University Press says, "The response to the quiz is very heartening and shows that the young generation of today is exploring language and expanding their vocabulary. I'm happy that the Oxford Dictionaries continue to support and expand the students' use of the language. With these quizzes we at the Oxford University Press India are able to bring together students from various schools and help them to connect in a meaningful way." Speaking on the occasion, S. Sonar Principal DPS Jammu lauded the role of "Oxford University Press which is over 100 years old in India and about 500 years old in Oxford (USA) where it actually started functioning during the year 1480.
