| ‘Sher-e-Kashmir did not sign 1975 accord’ | | Does it make any difference? | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 8: Breaking his long silence, the general secretary of the National Conference, Sheikh Nazir while talking to local English daily said Sher-e-Kashmir did not sign the 1975 accord. However, Nazir did not say what difference it made. The ailing general secretary, who is known for his anti-India stand, perhaps wants to convey that Sher-e-Kashmir had no role to play in the Indra-Abdullah Accord. If that is the motive then he is deliberately molesting history. Acting president of the Plebiscite Front, Advocate GN Hagroo in an interview recorded a month before his death said: "Soon after the 1971 war, the home ministry prepared a file which accurately showed Sheikh Abdullah's assets and wealth. In the last para of the report, the home ministry suggested action against Sheikh Abdullah for having wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income. Sheikh Abdullah was shattered by the report. Meanwhile, New Delhi had won over Begum Abdullah and his sons through Miss Sarabhai. The home ministry report and the pressure at domestic front forced Sheikh Abdullah change his stand. Soon after, Beg and Parthasarthy talks commenced." In the same interview, Hagroo said how Sher-e-Kashmir ridiculed Beg for prolonging the talks. He (Sher-e-Kashmir) was only interested in transfer of power to him and did not care for restoration of autonomy or anything else, said Hagroo. "One day when Beg was talking to Parthasarthy, Sher-e-Kashmir walked in, dragged Beg out , abused him and directed him not to indulge in ifs and buts. He was told in clear terms to speed up the process of transfer of power", he revealed. Before the accord was signed, Sheikh Abdullah and Mirza Afzal Beg issued a series of statements wherein it was mentioned that New Delhi had agreed to restore pre-53 status. Amid massive protests, the Plebiscite Front Council discussed the terms and conditions of the accord and ratified it on February 15. A few members opposed it. Sofi Muhammad Akber and Advocate GN Hagroo were two of them. Nazir must know, Sher-e-Kashmir has justified the Accord in his autobiography on page 837. "It was not a deviation from the basic stand. It was change of strategy. We shifted our struggle from streets to the table." Xxxxxx |
