PDP questions Omar's leadership, asks him to bind up NC
Shrinking Support-Base

Jammu, Dec 8: Working president of the ruling National Conference (NC) and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is at the receiving end. He is being accused of destroying the premier political organization of Kashmir, if not Jammu & Kashmir State. Commentators have been suggesting since December 23, 2012 that the "premier" political organization, which dominated the state's political scene in general and Kashmir Valley in particular for decades, have lost its moorings and that its leadership has fallen from grace. They have also been saying that the owners of the NC compromised the party's ideology from time to time to enjoy loaves and fishes of office.
It was on December 22 that Omar Abdullah made a statement at Bandipora that the NC and the Congress should forge pre-poll alliance and contest the next assembly elections jointly in order to prevent the People's Democratic Party (PDP) from capturing the state power. He made this statement while addressing party workers and some panchayat representatives. (The NC and the Congress contested the just-held elections to the four Legislative Council reserved seats jointly and the coalition won all the four seats.) He had accused the PDP leaders (Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Mehbooba Mufti) of carrying on a no-holds-barred disinformation campaign against his party and the government and said that the "power hungry" PDP leadership could go to any extent to capture the state power.
The Chief Minister had sprung a big surprise by making such a statement in the sense that he suggested pre-poll alliance with a party which his uncle Mustafa Kamaal and several other senior party leaders had been despising and which, according to them, was responsible for the arrest and dismissal of the founder of the party Sheikh Abdullah and for the collapse of the Farooq Abdullah's government. His statement was taken to mean that he had realized that his party just cannot win elections on its own and that it had been left with no other option but to enter into some kind of alliance with other parties, especially the Congress, in order to keep the main opposition PDP away from the state's corridors of power.
It is interesting to note that the Chief Minister's happiness over the victory of the coalition candidates has been questioned by his detractors, particularly the PDP leadership and stated that the NC would not have won the election, had it not forged an alliance with the Congress. Yesterday, the PDP spokesperson Nayeem Akhtar taunted Omar Abdullah and asked him to merge his party into the Congress party, saying that the "vote share in the Legislative Council elections is a precursor to the downfall of the NC which has had a very important position on the state's political map". "They might have won all the seats but the vote percentage itself is an indication that the NC has a tough time ahead…Omar has brought the National Conference to such a stage where they have to rely on the Congress to fight PDP…The vote percentage was a testimony to the fact that the PDP has emerged as the single largest regional Party in JK. You will see that in next assembly elections, the National Conference will face the music and will find it very tough on almost all the seats," Akhter was quoted as saying. In fact, he talked to a local news agency. The fact of the matter is that the PDP spokesman questioned the leadership of Omar and sought to make the people believe that it was none other than Omar Abdullah who has brought his party to such a stage.
