early times report
Jammu, Dec 8: The deplorable scene of politics in the state, as well as country may have many reasons, but the one that can be seen governing all the reasons is the in-active participation of the youth in the current scenario.
The youth of the city seems to be in-active in joining politics either due lack of interest, or just to stay away from the `detested lot'.
There is no denying the fact that youth take up issues of grave importance, discuss them but seem disinterested in changing eh system. "Politics is not my cup of tea though I can see it as omnipresent, at college level, at university level, and even at our homes," says Chetna Bhushan, a student of Polit-ical Science Department, Jammu University.
According to her politics and corruption are inseparable these days. "Even thinking of joining politics scares me", she said.
The indifference of the youth can be gauged from the fact that the voter Identity card is only a tool to get them a new network connection.
Rohit Sharma, another student tried to sound prudent. "Well, I do criticize the system, but I do it in a positive way. One needs to be ready with a solution for that problem as well," he said. Politics does not fascinate him. He has a voting card but new electoral rolls don't have his name.
Most of the youth who talked to Early Times seem content with what they are doing. Taking politics as a profession is nobody's wish.
Professor Rekha Chow-dhary, who teaches political science at Jammu Unive-rsity said, "When it comes to the active participation of youth in political systems, the youth of the city are totally 'apolitical'.
The main reason for not participating actively in this system, according to her, is the failure of political parties to produce role models unlike the corporate sector and even the Bollywood.
Stressing need for active participation of youth in politics, she said expressing views on Face book or Twitter won't make nay difference. She further said that the middle class youth can't wait till 50s, when they are treated as politically mature, as they have to look after their families much earlier, as compared to the urban youth.
Moreover people should stop relating politics with corruption as well as criminalization, she opines.
