| Kohli scores a ton, Dhoni 99, but India still trail England by 33 | | | agencies
Nagpur, Dec 15: Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni defied all odds on day three to grind down England, but India lost four wickets in the last session. The hosts were 297 for 8 and trailed by 33 runs at stumps here on Saturday. Kohli looked determined to carry on after slamming his third Test ton, but got trapped by Graeme Swann and thus ending the big 198-run partnership with Dhoni. He fell at 103 off 295 balls, which included 11 hits to the fence. Debutant Ravindra Jadeja joined Dhoni at the crease and couldn't make an impact, as James Anderson trapped him plumb infront for 12.
After that Dhoni, took charge of the situation and ensured that no further damage was done. In his nineties, he didn't rush into things, but unfortunately was run out at 99. He was trying to sneak in a quick single and an alert Alastair Cook at mid-off got a direct hit to run him out. Piyush Chawla joined R Ashwin (78*) and could manage only one run, as he was castled by Swann. Earlier, in the second session Dhoni and Kohli denied England a wicket as India went into tea at 227 for 4 trailing by 103. Dhoni was on 75 and Kohli on 77 and stitched together an unbeaten partnership of 156 runs to keep the England bowlers at bay for two long sessions of the day. After the second new ball was taken, both the batsmen raised the tempo of their game to reach their respective half-centuries.
Kohli was the first to notch up his sixth fifty off 171 balls, while Dhoni smacked a short ball for a boundary to reach his 28th one off 137 balls. Dhoni did give Tim Bresnan a return catch at the score of 72, but the bowler couldn't hold on to the half chance. Meanwhile, at the start of the day, Dhoni and Kohli showed resilience in the first session as India went into lunch at 146 for 4 and trailing by 184 runs. Resuming at an overnight score of 87 for 4, both the batsmen played cautiously and didn't missed out on any scoring opportunities.
Going into the interval, Kohli was unbeaten on 46 and Dhoni was batting at 31. James Anderson started the proceedings of the day and straight away got the ball to reverse. He also got good support from Monty Panesar and Swann, who bowled well in tandem.
On day three, England were all out for 330 and in reply India's top order failed to rise to the occasion with Virender Sehwag (0), Cheteshwar Pujara (26), Gautam Gambhir (37) and Sachin Tendulkar (2) getting out cheaply
