| Government employees continue strike for second day in Jammu | | | Early Times Report
Jammu/Srinagar, Dec 15: Several striking government employees today courted arrest as they clashed with police during a protest rally in Jammu on the second day of their two-day strike. Over 300 employees had gathered at MAM Stadium here to take out a rally to Raj Bhawan to protest against the government but were intercepted in between by police at Indira Chowk in view of prohibitory orders imposed around Civil Secretariat area. After a brief clash with police, over 50 government employees were detained and later released, most of them leaders of different organisations. Routine work was affected in various government departments as the employees continued their strike for second consecutive day. "There was strike in government offices and work was paralysed but government has turned a deaf ear to our strike. If the government does not implement the agreement, we will intensify our agitation," President Employees Joint Action Committee (EJAC) Mohammad Gafoor Dar said. The striking employees, under the aegis of Joint Consultative Committee (JCC), are demanding a policy on regularisation of daily-wage earners, besides enhancement of retirement age from 58 to 68 years and removal of pay anomalies in clerical cadre. Work in government offices across the Kashmir valley was badly hit today after the employees continued their two-day pen-down strike to press the State Government for fulfillment of their long pending demands. Meanwhile, in their second day progaramme,employees in Srinagar who had come from various District headquarters assembled at Maulana Azad road and tried to proceed towards the Governor House to register their protest . The protest which was headed by joint consultative committee (JCC) president Khursheed Alam,Employees Joint Action Committee president,Abdul Qayoom Wani and many other District Heads was later foiled by jammu and Kashmir Police and dozens of employees were arrested on this occasion. Among the other demands, the employees were seeking immediate regularization of more than fifteen year old people working as daily wagers in different government departments, payment of the 6th Pay Commission and increase in the age limit from 58 to 60 years. In his statement JCC president Khursheed Alam said that repeatedly deceptive Government acts have fed up us and we are requesting the Chief Minister to intervene into the matter and solve the long pending problems of employees. He said that participation of employees of different departments in today's protest proved our strength and our struggle will remain intact till the achievement of our goal. |
