EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Dec 16 : Army celebrated 41st anniversary of "Vijay Diwas" here today in which a large number of in service and ex-servicemen including civil dignitaries paid homage to the martyrs. On December 16, 1971 Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Aurora, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Command of the Army took the surrender of 93,000 Pakistan Army Soldiers alongwith its Commander-in-Chief of East Pakistan, Lieutenant General AAK Niazi, which is the single largest surrender ever in the world's military history. The Army celebrates 'Vijay Diwas' on December, 16 every year and on the day the Nation and the Army pay tributes to the 'Veer Jawans.' To commemorate the historic victory over Pakistan, a book "Brave-hearts of 16 Corps" was released by the Lt Gen DS Hooda, GOC, White Knight Corps. The book contains the details of gallant soldiers of White Knight Corps. Wreaths were laid by the GOC, Tiger Division and other decorated soldiers including honorary Captain Bana Singh, at the Tiger War Memorial at Satwari here, the defence statement said. "In Akhnoor, to commemorate the great day and to remember those who laid down their lives for the honour and safety of the nation, GOC, Crossed Swords Division and other senior officers laid wreaths at the War Memorial in the presence of large number of officers, Junior Commissioned officers, other ranks and ex servicemen," it added. |
