| 'Midnight campaigning' changes scene of poll, high drama in BJP office | | Murder of democracy…? | | Early Time Report Jammu, Dec 16: The organizational politics is getting murkier as the date for state president election in BJP is approaching. In what can be seen as murder of democracy and brazen act of foul play, a midnight campaign cum exercise last night for the district Jammu president polls scheduled today changed the entire game of contest and ended up in a high drama in the state headquarters here today. Sources said soon after issuance of notification one of the strong contenders for post of district Jammu president of BJP Subash Jandial got the physical parade of his supporters and mandatory voters done in form of the state General Secretary organization Ashok Koul and other senior leaders on Saturday . In all they included 8 voters , including four from the mandal level. The exercise was aimed at showing that all the voters are with him and shall support him alone when the formal voting takes place. However, a midnight hectic exercise, which sources said was done at the instance and under the supervision of topmost leadership in the party changed the entire scene of polls. All the eight voters according to sources were wooed and allegedly pressurized by this group which wanted them to cast vote in favour of Rajesh Gupta who is the sitting president of district Jammu. The voters toed the same line, much to the shock of Jandial and surprise of other leaders who were witness to the support they had exhibited and expressed a day back in his favour. Sources said high drama prevailed during the conduct of polls in the office as Subash Jandial cried foul alleging it was the murder of democracy . He left the office fuming with allegations against the leadership responsible for this sudden change in the scene. Sources said entire hierarchy was agog with the murmur that the voters had changed mind under some pressure from highest quarter with whatever allurement that they finally voted the sitting president of Jammu district to be repeated for the assignment. While it is for the poll observers particularly from the one deputed from Centre to look into these allegations, the 'midnight campaigning' also brings to fore certain aberrations as far as the conduct of elections are concerned. Sources said the pressure on voters to get the sitting president repeated for next term was deliberately done by the leadership so as to pave way for a ground of what is being viewed as 'repeat culture' for the post of state president. Moreover, the major loophole in re-election of sitting president according to sources lies in the fact is that it is against the constitutional provision in which it is clearly stated that no sitting functionary can be repeated for next term unless a constitutional amendment was effected for the purpose.
