| Cong oppose to committ itself any alliance with NC | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 17: Though the party high command continues to oppose any change in the three-year long political arrangement in Jammu and Kashmir, the state unit of the Congress is not in favour of giving any assurance to the National Conference leadership on retaining the present alliance during the next Assembly poll. Party sources in Jammu said that the leadership of the state unit of the congress does not want to commit itself on future alliance with the NC because all depended on the performance of the three main political parties, the Congress, the PDP and the NC. Since the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir has gained a status of a Government maker it wants to keep open the option for framing an alliance either with the NC or the PDP. A senior Congress leader, wishing to remain unidentified, said that "we have had a more cordial and purposeful alliance with the PDP than with the National Conference and as such the party high command should keep the alliance option open." Senior leaders in the state Congress are of the view that if the Congress announced its alliance prior to the next Assembly election it may affect the electoral prospects for the party. They said it would be in the interest of the party that the Congress kept its pre-poll cards secret and wait for the poll results. They said if the NC leadership is given some assurance on keeping the current alliance alive during the next Assembly poll it may take the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir for a ride. |
