| GMC becomes den of illicit business | | Principal, Govt turning blind eye? | | Abodh Sharma Jammu, Dec 17: While death of poor Doda girl has unlid a can of worms with principal himself in the centre of the controversy , sources inside GMC hospital divulge that the premier heath care centre has become den of illicit activities and those at the helm of affairs have not only chosen to turn a blind eye but have connived with those involved in unethical and corrupt practices. Large scale discrepancies have been reported in the purchase of implants in the department of Orthopaedics. It is strange that while the implants needed in surgical operations in Government hospitals across the Valley are provided to the patients free of cost, patients are made to pay through their nose in Jammu for such implants to extend illegal benefits to the couple of blue eyed companies and get huge cuts from them in the bargain. "My brother need an implant for his surgery. The doctors got three implants to check which one would fit in. While we were made to pay for the one that was selected, we were asked to pay 'rent' for the other two" said Sudhir, an attendant. A senior doctor who did not want to be named said, Government has same purchase committees for hospitals in Jammu as well as Kashmir, but doctors in the Valley perhaps understand their ethical and professional responsibility towards their people. "Though smaller implants are available in the hospital, the costlier ones have to be afforded by the patients," he said, agreeing that nepotism and corruption has take its roots deep and wide in the GMC hospital. In another startling revelation, another attendant divulged that touts of several doctors, most of the time hospital staff, are working overtime in the hospital to try and convince patients to get the surgeries done in private clinics and nursing homes where those doctors are pursuing their private practices. "They promise negotiated rates and offer to get the surgery done even when the patient continues to be admitted in the hospital," said a hospital employee pleading anonymity. "Since the hospital gives long dates for surgeries, those coming from far off places are lured to accept their offers to avoid inconvenience. After getting the surgery done, they undertake to shift the patient back to the hospital saving him post operative expenses," he added. It has been reliably learnt that hospital administration is aware of things but those who are expected to check such activities have connived with the culprits for obvious reasons. |
