| 14 years on, JVC Medical College awaits upgradation | | | Early Times Report srinagar, Dec 17: Authorities of Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences Soura have failed to increase the bed strength of JVC Medical College in the last 14 years to 400 beds, a pre-requisite by MCI for a medical college with 50 students' intake. Sources told Early Times that JVC College with an initial strength of around 280 beds is presently having only 230 beds. "Since last 14 years the SKIMS authorities have not bothered to increase the bed strength to 400 a pre requisite by MCI for a medical college of 50 students intake. An increase of student intake to 100 which Health Ministry has proposed seems a distant dream under such circumstances," they revealed. That SKIMS Medical College Bemina was run by a trust and came into being as JVCMS. In 1998 it was taken over by the State Government to provide better health-care to the poor and needy people of the State. "The decision had backfired. The departments are not able to get new equipment, advanced diagnostic tools due to lack of space as the same has not been enhanced since last 14 years despite 10 fold increase in outpatient load," a senior medico at the hospital said. He said the medical college lacks MRI, CT Scan, digital X-Ray, Laparoscopic equipment, well established surgical and medical Intensive Care Unit besides a large number of life saving gadgets and advanced diagnostic equipment. "People are calculating deaths in one hospital or the other. Since JVC Bemina is functioning as a sub-district hospital, critically ill patient are referred to other hospitals due to which mortality rate is less here and referrals are more as can be verified from log books," he said. The faculty to the hospital is being deputed from SKIMS due to which not only departments at SKIMS suffer, but also JVC Medical College hospital. "The faculty they never visit JVC Hospital for more than five days a month affecting services at both places as this remote control is not possible for institutions concerned with life of patients," sources said. The JVC Hospital, according to insiders, needs a full time Principal/ Vice Principal. "This is unfortunate that an Associate Prof Dr Reyaz Farooq has been appointed as Principal of a Dental College but more than 15 faculty members of the rank of Associate Professor and above in SKIMS Medical College are ignored. If the Government is sincere, the selection of Principal can be done on similar criteria's as are in practice for selection/appointment of Director SKIMS with little modification as the Principal SKIMS Medical College is a lower post as compared to Director SKIMS or any suitable person from Professor/Associate Professor category can be placed as Principal or Vice Principal as is practice in most of the medical colleges," a senior official in the administration said. |
