| What has Pakistan Interior Minister's visit achieved? | | | Early Times Report new delhi, Dec 17: Pakistan Interior Minister has concluded his tour to New Delhi without making any headway in the relationship between the two countries. The day he landed here Rehman Malik said his country needed sufficient evidence against the people India believed were harbouring in Pakistan after masterminding terror strikes in India. The Mumbai attacks are one glaring example of cross border terrorism that was not only hatched in Pakistan, but the masterminds based in that country guided minutest details of the terror strike when it was happening in Mumbai. The fact is that those who refuse to see clear and irrefutable evidence will always continue to deny it even if it is happening before their eyes. Unless Pakistan addresses the breeding grounds of terrorism those have now finally started attacking the very edifice of Pakistan itself, any sustainable peace and permanent negotiations between India and Pakistan remain euphemistic. How can the worst enemies of peace and dialogue roam freely in our neighbourhood with Pakistan almost feigning ignorance about their very existence and we continue to live in a state of self-denial and still be trying to broker peace? It is the experience of the two countries since 1947 that wars, enmity, animosity and mistrust have led us nowhere. But, that still does not mean our country should condone every terror act started from the soil of our neighbour simply because we are the large-hearted big brother in South Asian neighbourhood. The visit of Rehman Malik has once again brought to light the basic fact that every single issue that needs resolution between India and Pakistan can only be resolved through peaceful negotiations and that there can be no peaceful negotiations as long as violence is perpetrated against us from the soil of our neighbouring country. Since the partition of the Sub-continent, the worst sufferer in the continuing estrangement India and Pakistan has been the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Three wars have already been fought in Jammu and Kashmir since 1947 and from Jammu to Kargil people have lived terrified lives due to cross border shelling for nearly 60 years. How can Pakistan Interior Minister deny the fact that unless there is permanent peace dispute resolution would always remain elusive. International relations have always remained subservient to the national interests of countries. In 2012 nobody can argue that peace would be against the national interest of either India or Pakistan. |
