| Principal GMC withholding child health care funds to SMGS hospital | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 21: The Government Medical College (GMC) officials are not learning lesson from regular infant deaths in the only Pediatric hospital of Jammu, Shri Maharaja Gulab Singh (SMGS) and are not releasing funds to improve child health care. The Directorate of National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) had released Rs 2 crore to GMC Principal for improving child health care in SMGS in first week of October but they remain undisbursed. Even another infant death in SMGS hospital that brought out serious procedural lapses and callous attitude of the doctors including the Principal GMCH has failed to shock authorities out of their slumber. "The NRHM Directorate had given Rs 2 crore each to GMC Jammu Principal and GB Pant hospital Srinagar for child health care. We released the money to GMC Jammu in first week of October and don't know whether the same has been utilized so far or not," said an NRHM official. After the infant death in GB Pant hospital in Srinagar and poor child health care in SMGS hospital Jammu, huge funds were allocated to both hospitals for improvement. Though GB Pant hospital has shown some improvement, but the condition in SMGS remain unchanged. "We on our own are doing our best to improve health care in SMGS but shortage of staff and accommodation are our pressing constraints," said Dr. Dara Singh, Deputy Superintendent SMGS hospital Jammu. When asked that whether they had received the money released by NRHM, Dr. Singh replied, "We have only received a letter that NRHM have released the funds but we haven't yet received any." Sources in GMC told Early Times that the money is in the account of GMC Principal since first week of October and hasn't been released to SMGS. Repeated attempts to contact GMC Principal Dr. Aniece Chowdhary and Chief Accounts officer of GMC Dr. Tabassum have failed to evoke any response. |
