File report on malnutrition of pregnent women: HC

Srinagar, Dec 28: The Jammu and Kashmir High Court has directed authorities to file a status report indicating the cause of malnutrition of women and measures being taken to overcome this problem. A division bench comprising Justices Virender Singh and Muzaffar Hussain Attar passed the direction on a clubbed matter of PIL seeking directions for a consummate medical care in G B Pant Children Hospital here. The Court asked NRHM Mission Director, Dr Yash Pal Sharma to file a report on as to how and in which manner at village, block and district level, the women suffering from malnutrition are being treated. "What is being done to overcome the problems which are being faced by the pregnant women on account of malnutrition and what are the remedies for the same," the court asked. The court also directed the Principal, Government Medical College Srinagar, to file a compliance report on completion of the selection process in respect of providing manpower to Nutritional Rehabilitation Centers (NRC) before January 31, next year. The Court passed the direction after the Medical Superintendent of the G B Pant hospital Dr Muneer Massodi submitted that the NRCs at the hospital will be made operational by January 31. He informed the court that the manpower for the centers was to be provided by the Principal GMC. In an affidavit filed in the court, Dr Massodi has said an amount of Rs 2 crore under NRHM Scheme has been received by the hospital administration for upgradation of G B Pant Pediatric Hospital. He has also given details in the report about how the amount has been spent. In another direction, the court directed director Social Welfare Department, Kashmir, to file affidavit indicating how the mother and children are being benefited under the ICDS Scheme after the petitioner said SWD and Health department do not work in tandem in providing benefits to the children under ICDS. The court also directed secretary of the Service Selection Board (SSB) to complete the selection process in respect of non-gazetted staff of the Health Services and the Medical education departments before January 31.
