| Govt schools fail to impress yet again | | Teachers seek infrastructure, promise better results | |
Early Times Report
srinagar, Dec 28: The government teachers of Kashmir region have questioned the action against some of their colleagues for not producing better results in the matriculation examination held in October. The results were out last week and once again the government schools failed to impress the authorities. There are 11633 government schools in Kashmir province. After education was made a fundamental right, the government approved a sum of Rs 778 crore for improving education infrastructure. But the government report found that 4830 schools in the state still do not have their own building. Most of them run in shabby rented rooms. A school in Shumriyal village of Kupwara district is a typical example of official neglect. It is situated on the banks of a roaring river which the students and teachers find difficult to cross especially in summer when the water level rises. The danger of getting drowned has driven some parents to move their children to private schools elsewhere. The Education Officials are well aware of the situation. But no action has been taken till date. Four angry teachers speak as one, pointing out the other challenges, "This school was built in 1960 and upgraded to a Middle School in 2005. But nothing was done to address the problem of the river. Providing for a boundary wall would certainly help, as would a playground and toilets. Our children have nothing to do with outdoor games because we are in constant fear of an accident." The school has to be closed down in June when the river is in spate. "Flood water reaches the school premises and even into the classrooms. How can we possibly complete the course?" laments a teacher. The teachers question action against teachers, head-masters/principals whose institutions failed in the matriculation results declared last week. "Give us the infrastructure and see the results", they said.
