| Cross LoC trade hijacked by traders from outside J&K | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 12: The cross Line of Control (LoC) trade between the two sides of Jammu and Kashmir has been hijacked by Amritsar, Delhi and Lahore based traders. Though the basic purpose of this trade was to bridge the gap between the people of two sides and increasing people to people contact but the purpose seems far from fulfilled. The cross LoC trade which was meant for traders of Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) is now being dominated by Amritsar and Delhi based traders on J&K side and Lahore based traders on PoK side at Chakan-da-bagh-Rawalakote route. These traders have put their proxy traders at Poonch who are trading on behalf of these traders and are offering handful amount to these proxy traders. Every week goods of around Rs 3 crore are being traded at Chakan-da-bagh-Rawalakote route, in which J&K traders have no or negligible share. Sources told Early Times that such is the monopoly of non local traders that there is the clear violation of norms of trade as the limit of item being traded between both sides has increased manifold which used to be 21 earlier. All this is going from past more than year and there is neither check on traders not on the items of trade, sources added. In October 2008, the trade delegation of PoK also visited the State for finalizing the trade in which the Chamber of Commerce and Industries Jammu (CCIJ) played an important role. But now, even CCIJ has no say in the trade and has been sidelined by outside State traders. Sources further said that on PoK side, Lahore based traders have also taken the command of the cross LoC trade and PoK based traders have been marginalized. The J&K Government has shown ignorance of outside traders monopolizing the cross LoC trade. |
