Weather improves in Kashmir, drops in Ladakh; Kargil coldest

Srinagar, Jan 14: People in the Kashmir valley finally witnessed a respite from the cold weather while the minimum temperature dropped further in Ladakh region where Kargil with minus 16.4 degrees Celsius was the coldest. Barring world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, there was finally respite from the cold in the Valley. A Met department spokesman said here this afternoon that weather will remain mainly dry over Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours. However, he said a fresh WD, originating in Arabian sea is approaching the region through Afghanistan and Pakistan. WD will affect the region for three days from January 16, he said, adding there could be rain or snow in the region during that period. He said there would be increase in the precipitation from January 17 and 18 and a decrease thereafter, he said. Gulmarg witnessed a drop of more than 4 degrees in the minimum temperature against yesterday's minus 4.2 degree. However, another tourist resort in south Kashmir, Pahalgam experienced an increase in the minimum temperature. The Met spokesman said it was zero degree, eight notches above normal. The summer capital, Srinagar, also witnessed an increase in the minimum temperature after above normal maximum temperature yesterday. He said the sky will remain partly cloudy tomorrow but the maximum will remain several degrees above normal. Yesterday the maximum was 8.5 degree, three degree above normal, he said, adding the minimum was 1.6 degree, again four degree above normal. Elsewhere in the Valley the minimum and maximum has improved, he said. However, there was no respite from the cold in the Ladakh region where the minimum temperature dropped further. At border town of Kargil on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, the minimum temperature was minus 16.4 degree, more than six degree less than yesterday. Similarly, at Leh the minimum was minus 15.2 degree, again a drop of five notches against yesterday's temperature when it was 10.2 degrees.
