| Pakistani brutality: BJP urges UPA Govt to imitate US | | Bringing perpetrators to justice | | Neha JAMMU, Jan 14: The attitude of the BJP, which, according to many keen Pakistan-watchers and strategic affairs experts, committed a grave blunder in 2003 by extending a hand of friendship to Pakistan and started "peace process" with hostile and utterly undependable Pakistan, has, it seems, undergone a change in the wake of what Pakistan did in the Mendhar sector on January 8. It has come forward and promised unflinching support to the Congress-led UPA Government provided it is willing to isolate and act against Pakistan and take all steps which force Islamabad to handover to New Delhi the perpetrators of 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks as well as perpetrators of 8/1 Mendhar attack. The BJP, according to reports emanating from New Delhi's 11 Ashoka Road, wants the UPA Government to (1) suspend forthwith all diplomatic and economic ties with Pakistan, (2) recall Indian High Commissioner from Pakistan and (3) educate the international community about the Pakistani belligerence. In other words, the BJP wants the UPA Government to adopt a tough stand against Pakistan and abandon the ongoing peace process with it. Then there are some senior leaders in the party, including former Finance Minister and External Affairs Minister Yaswant Sinha, who not only endorse the party stand on Pakistan but also want the UPA Government to imitate United States. In other words, they want the UPA Government to act in the manner Washington D C acted only recently in Abbotabad (Pakistan) and captured and killed Osama bin Laden without informing Islamabad. They have come to believe that it would be only futile to talk to Pakistan which is interested only in promoting terrorism in the region and that the best thing for New Delhi to do would be to secure its borders by strengthening the Indian war machine to the extent possible. Besides, they have urged the government to give Pakistan what they call "Controlled military response" clearly suggesting that this is the only alternative left for India, which has from time to time overlooked Pakistani crimes and announced concessions unilaterally, and that such a response from New Delhi alone would force Pakistan to behave. Their refrains are that India committed mistake after mistake by trusting the untrustworthy Pakistan; that we must learnt from our past mistakes; that those who do not learn from history are destined to be doomed; that the history of Pakistan only shows that it has never respected any written agreement between the two countries; that the recent developments have left us with no other option but to introspect and strengthen ourselves to the extent that Pakistan begs for a dialogue with New Delhi and not the vice-versa; and that the suggestion of the Indian Air Force Marshal N A K Brown to look at other options needs to be appreciated by the UPA Government. The fact of the matter is that the BJP wants the UPA Government to give a very tough message to Pakistan through words and definite actions. What the question is: Will the "secular and peace-loving" UPA Government endorse the BJP line? The answer is a big NO. How else should one describe what External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said yesterday? He said: "We are not going to be pressurized by wild calls for revenge and reaction. We will do what is in the best interest of the country and peace, keeping in mind that there is a lot at stake…We hope we'll both have the ability to contain and control while we continue to look at how we resolve the fundamental issue". What he said clearly indicated that the UPA Government is not going to oblige the BJP. On the contrary, it suggested that the UPA Government still has full faith in Islamabad despite its outright refusal to see reason and reform itself. It's unfortunate.
