| Attacks on panchayat members grave concern: Prof Gupta | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Jan 14: Former Union Minister and MLA Prof Chaman Lal Gupta today termed brutal attacks by the Pakistan sponsored ultras on the innocent people, especially the elected representatives of Panchayats coupled with growing violation of ceasefire in a bid to push more trained terrorists as a grave concern. He lashed out at the coalition leaders, "both in the state and the centre, for not taking the developments with the required seriousness which is needed to protect the democracy at the grass root level and dignity of the country in face of the enemy designs." Prof Gupta said that the commanders of the terrorists have been threatening the panches and sarpanches for resigning for quite some time past "but instead of taking upon such elements and telling Pakistan to handover these enemies of the people to India, the Government has been sleeping over the matter." "Not only this, little was done to provide security cover to the panches and sarpanches even in the militancy infected areas. On one hand the ultras and separatists are against these elected representatives and on the other the government is still reluctant to extend the provision of 73rd Amendment of the Indian Constitution for empowerment of these basic democracies. This approach of the ruling leaders also raises many doubts about the sincerity of men in power," he alleged. Prof Gupta recalled that despite opposition by the nationalists the security measures were curtailed even from sensitive areas and cries for removal of AFSPA were raised in addition with the frivolous changes against the men of the forces also "speaks volumes about the sincerity of the purpose." "The painful happenings along the LoC and also the Jammu border, lacks the response at the New Delhi level, he added and regretted that the dignity of the country is being put at the stake and a sense of feeling is being created that India is a weak nation and a soft country. This notion is highly injurious for the health and unity of this big country," he added. |
