2/1/2013 11:47:40 PM

JAMMU, Feb 1: A few hours after his birth, a newly born male infant was stolen from the ever crowded children ward of Shri Maharaja Gulab Singh Hospital Jammu (SMGS), this morning.
This was the third such incident during two months in the only children hospital of the Jammu region, which has otherwise heavy security arrangements and CCTV camera vigil.
Officials told Early Times that a woman Sharifa was referred from Sub District Hospital Nowshera of District Rajouri here at SMGS and after caesarian she delivered a male child. The baby was born at around 4.30 pm on Thursday and was shifted to neo-natal ward of the hospital for preliminary medical care. However, the infant was reported missing in wee hours at 3.30 am just few hours after the birth.
Aggrieved father of infant, Mohammad Mushtaq (a labourer) resident of Singh Pura Nariyan Tehsil Nowshera said that he was not allowed to watch over the infant in the ward and was forced to leave as there was no female attendant. "Even my mother was also in the ward, as she slept, they (thieves) stole the baby. I found the infant missing as I returned to the ward", he claimed. "I immediately brought the matter to the notice of the security personnel and para-medics on duty but even after searching the entire hospital there was no trace of my child", he said.
Yelling in pain for loss of her son within about 10 hours of birth, her mother Sharifa could hardly say, "He has not taken milk…., from where I will get him back".
Medical Superintendent of SMGS hospital AK Sharma said that the matter has been taken very seriously and every effort was being made to trace the abductor. "We are continuously in touch with concerned police and they are checking CCTV footage to ascertain the facts", he said. "As per video footage, a woman was seen several times strolling in this ward, I suspect that the infant has been stolen by the same lady," he claimed.
SP Jammu Rajeshwar Singh when contacted informed that the woman who took the baby from here has been caught in CCTV cameras. The identification process is in progress to arrest her.
