| Medical Department hampers probe by withholding autopsy report | | Death of Dessa infant in SMGS hospital | | Avinash Azad JAMMU, Feb 1: Amidst a magisterial probe into the death of a girl child in SMGS hospital on December 12, the Medical Department is showing reluctance to furnish the autopsy report to inquiry committee. The report, it is believed, goes against the acting principal of GMC&H and former HoD, ENT department. Highly placed source informed Early Times that the delay in the autopsy report has hampered the probe that was ordered on December 19 with a time limit of one month. Sources said the report is lying with the Medical Department and the concerned are waiting for that. "Without postmortem report, the cause of death cannot be ascertained", they added. Sudarshan Singh, uncle of deceased child said that inquiries are being used as a shield to protect the erring officials. He alleged the child died due to the callousness of the doctor. 'We have met ADC Jammu who is heading the magisterial probe and also submitted all information and evidence to him. But Hospital authorities have not helped us", he said. He further said, "I have also submitted a slip to ADC Jammu, over which Dr Aniece Choudhary had prescribed some medicine and asked us for operation of baby on Monday (December 10). He said that they kept waiting for HOD ENT but he didn't turn up. "The condition of the girl deteriorated at night and no doctor was available for her treatment. We then contacted ENT HOD through Department Officials but he didn't pick the phone, ultimately leading to her death at 12.30 last night," he added. The girl was admitted to SMGS hospital on December 8 after a corn seed stuck in her throat. The one-and-a-half-year-old girl from Dessa belt in Doda district died at the hospital on December 12 triggering protests by family members and relatives. They alleged that negligence on part of doctors was responsible for the death of the child. Then Government ordered probe, removed head of the ENT department. It is pertinent to mention here that many inquiries ordered into various complaints in the Government Medical College and Hospital from time to time have been forgotten and forgone, denying justice to the complainants and sweeping the wrongs under the carpet. |
